In December, Governor Hochul signed two key bills positively impacting people with disabilities. The Fair Medical Debt Reporting Act prohibiting hospitals, health care professionals, and ambulances from reporting medical debt to credit agencies. This legislation allows New Yorkers to get the care they need without running the risk of having credit report penalties caused by medical debt. NYAIL is a member of the End Medical Debt Coalition because we know how much of a burden medical debt is to carry. While this legislation is a great step toward ending medical debt in NY there is still unfinished business. Governor Hochul also signed voting rights legislation making certain local elections outside New York City line up with Election Day on even numbered years. NYAIL strongly supports the signing of this bill because it encourages more voter participation.
NYAIL/CDANYS Budget Advocacy Day on Monday, February 12
Once again NYAIL and Consumer Directed Action of NYS (CDANYS) are partnering on a joint Budget Advocacy Day. There will be an opening program in the well of the Legislative Office Building, consisting of key legislative allies on our issues. This is your chance to meet with local Assembly members and Senators, encouraging them to support the issues in our priority agendas. Stay tuned for more information as the date gets closer! Note: the agendas will be available either at the end of January or beginning of February as we respond to Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposed executive budget. She will be delivering her State of the State address on Tuesday, January 9. Her proposed budget is due on January 16.
