Mayor Adams Appoints NYC Emergency Management Leadership Team

On Thursday, February 17th, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that Zachary Iscol will serve as commissioner of NYC Emergency Management with Christina Farrell serving as first deputy commissioner, the first woman ever to serve in that role. Congratulations to both Commissioner Iscol and First Deputy Commissioner Farrell. NYC CERT wish you luck in your new roles and are ready for the call if needed.

Abuwi Waheed

We learned earlier this week that Manhattan Division 5 CERT member, Abuwi Waheed, had passed away in November of last year. Abuwi had been a CERT member since 2016. He was an active member, who was trained as a Ready NY Presenter for Kids, and regularly participated in community meetings and the annual National Night Out event in Harlem. We join with his division members in appreciation of his service and dedication. Abuwi is missed.
Quiz of the Week

Thank you to all who participated in last week's Quiz of the Week. The correct answer is B) Two Years (66%). There seemed to be a high percentage (26.7%) of members who thought that it was one year. As per Section 2: Membership Roles of the NYC CERT Standard Operating Procedures, Inactive members can resume their active status upon consultation with and approval from division leadership. Once NYCEM is notified, members may made active again. Members inactive for more than two years are required to retake basic training.

You can find this information on page 3 of the NYC CERT SOPs.
Health & Safety Protocol

As NYCEM's Human Capital Bureau continues to review submissions relating to the Vaccine Mandate, NYCEM will continue sharing updates including the NYC CERT Newsletter and requests with membership with the understanding there is approval needed prior to any in-person deployments and events.

As of Tuesday, February 1, 2022, volunteers who did not submit appropriate documentation to meet the vaccine mandate or request a reasonable accommodation through NYCEM are considered inactive until they are in compliance.

All members placed inactive as a result of incompliance may be re-activated within two years (January 2024) if the proper documentation is submitted as requested and approved by NYC Emergency Management.

Buddy Check
As we close out a long year of volunteering to support your community and head into a new year with new challenges, please take some time to support one another. The best way to do that is by performing buddy checks.

What is a buddy check?
Taking the time to check on family and friends, especially those unable to leave their home for any reason. You might be surprised by the impact you'll have on those who you connect with.
Are you interested in becoming a mentor to new NYC CERT members?

All Volunteer leadership should be encouraging active members to serve in a mentor role in order to support both their growth as leaders and provide new opportunities for newer members to become more engaged.
  1. Complete the NYC CERT Mentor Program form to let us know if you'd like to be a mentor or mentee.
  2. Complete the Matching Questionnaire to help pair the mentor to a mentee. Both forms must be filled out to participate in the program.
