John D. Solomon Award
The John D. Solomon award was named after a CERT member who was committed to emergency preparedness. The award is given each year to an exceptional CERT member showing this same commitment. For 2021, we have selected Tracie Lord, Bronx Division 1 CERT, to receive this award.
Carlos Nieves Award
Carlos Nieves NYC CERT Award for Excellence in Deployment and Response, which is being presented to Brooklyn Division 5. Through 2021, the team had 12 members dedicating a total of 665.45 volunteer hours, 10 emergency deployments, and 19 planned, supporting a total of 39 deployments.
Certificate of Recognition
On the morning of Saturday, January 1st, several CERT volunteers were deployed to Coney Island to provide support with pedestrian management - which included the responsibility of making sure that everyone was safely partaking in the annual New Year’s Day NYC Polar Bear Plunge. Britta Husack, at the time a probationary member of Brooklyn Division 6 CERT observed one of the participants unconscious in the water. She immediately reacted and jumped into action. Britta successfully provided CPR to the participant allowing first responders time to transfer him to the local hospital. During the graduation ceremony, Britta was presented two certificates on behalf of New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol.
COVID-19 Medals

As we know, 2020 was a very difficult year for everyone. During this time, our NYC CERT volunteers exemplified the meaning of community and showed the city what it meant to be a volunteer.

NYC Emergency Management recognized a group of volunteers who supported the most COVID-19 deployment shifts citywide in 2020.
Quiz of the Week

Thank you to all who participated in last week's Quiz of the Week. The correct answer is: B) the 20th anniversary. In 2003, NYC Emergency Management, with support from the FDNY and NYPD, adapted the national CERT curriculum specifically to New York City's unique urban environment. Since then, NYC Emergency Management has been and continues to be the sponsoring agency for the CERT program throughout the five boroughs.

More details on the history of CERT can be found on page ii in the Introduction of the NYC CERT SOPs.

Buddy Check
As we close out a long year of volunteering to support your community and head into a new year with new challenges, please take some time to support one another. The best way to do that is by performing buddy checks.

What is a buddy check?
Taking the time to check on family and friends, especially those unable to leave their home for any reason. You might be surprised by the impact you'll have on those who you connect with.
