--ABOUT THE WALK--

From Grand Central Terminal we will take the 4/5 subway to Bowling Green where we will catch the NYC Ferry to Bay Ridge. We will then walk along the shore down to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Our next stop is the Harbor Defense Museum at Fort Hamilton. Fort Hamilton is an active US military base; be sure to bring photo id and be prepared for airport style security to enter the base. After the museum we will pause for a relaxing lunch at Positano on 4th Avenue. After lunch, participants will have a choice of taking a subway (back to Grand Central to catch the 3:30 or 4:02 train to Westport or visit Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island.

The Staten Island portion of the trip starts with taking a bus across the Verrazano Narrows Bridge (there is no pedestrian walkway on this bridge.) We will then visit Fort Wadsworth (operated by the National Park Service) which was an important defense for Manhattan throughout the 19th century and up to the end of World War II. After touring the visitor center, various artillery batteries, and perhaps the lighthouse, we will take a bus to the ferry. We will take the NYC Ferry to the west side of midtown Manhattan where we can catch the free NY Waterways shuttle bus to Grand Central. This ferry brings us closer to the Statue of Liberty than the Staten Island ferry and provides a very scenic ride up the Hudson River.

--RETURN TO CONNECTICUT--

"R" subway from Fourth Avenue and 95th Street to "Atlantic Ave/Barclays Center;" transfer to #4 or 5 subway to 42nd Street Grand Central

OR

NY Waterways shuttle to Grand Central Terminal.

Metro-North train back to Connecticut.
