Dear NYCHA Residents:
Given the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, NYCHA has been working diligently over the past several days to ensure the safety of our residents and our buildings. We have NYCHA staff on the ground assessing buildings - inspecting boilers, checking electrical and elevator systems, and working with the Office of Emergency Management, Con Edison, LIPA, National Grid and other partners to repair critical services.
There are 365 NYCHA buildings experiencing power outages in Zone A and other areas that require inspections. NYCHA teams have completed 80 percent of these initial assessments and expect to complete the process on Friday. We have found to date that while there is no significant structural damage, over 50 percent of the buildings have experienced flooding conditions in boiler and/or in electrical meter rooms. While we work to address these critical repairs in order to resume services as soon as possible, the following provides important information for families in NYCHA buildings with no power:
- Retrieval of personal items - For evacuated families you may return to your apartment to retrieve important items. We encourage you to please use caution when entering buildings.
I urge residents in affected areas to continue to listen for the guidance and direction of their Property Management and Community Operations teams. You should also continue to check the NYCHA website, NYCHA's Facebook and Twitter pages and call the NYCHA Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 for guidance on when building services will be operational. On behalf of the NYCHA family, thank you for your cooperation; thank you to all of our resident leaders and everyone throughout City government who is helping to ensure the safety of NYCHA residents.
Sincerely,
Cecil House
