NYCOMEC OPTI AOA Accreditation Inspection:   April 19-20, 2016

On Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20, 2016, NYCOMEC will undergo its AOA OPTI accreditation inspection.  On April 19 , the inspectors will begin their survey at the NYITCOM Old Westbury Campus, meeting with the Board of Directors, various committees and other constituencies.  On April 20 , the inspection team will conduct a hospital-based visit at Nassau University Medical Center, meeting with DMEs/Program Directors and Trainees.

NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series Continues Successfully 

The second webinar of the NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series repeated the success of the first one! On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, Patricia  Kooyman, D.O. , Assistant Professor, OMM Department, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, conducted a presentation titled Osteopathic Considerations in Postural Imbalance   to an audience of close, again, to 100 faculty, trainees, students and staff from several NYCOMEC member institutions.

ROC-NY 2016  Educational CME Programs

The New York State Osteopathic Medical Society held its annual Regional Osteopathic Convention-New York (ROC-NY 2016) starting on Friday, March 31, and ending on Sunday April 3, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency Long Island hotel in Hauppauge, NY. The theme of the convention, QM2: Quantum Medicine/Quality Medicine for the Present and Future, was emphasized throughout didactic lectures presented by the several distinguished educators. Twelve presenters are osteopathic physicians affiliated with NYCOMEC's member institutions. The presenters and their topics were: Lewis Bass, D.O., NYITCOM, who presented on NYS Infection Control & Barrier Precautions; Sheldon Yao, D.O., NYITCOM, conducted an OMM Workshop; Cheryl R. Rosenfeld, D.O., NYITCOM, spoke on Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Treatment Controversies Continue - Will Pharmacogenomics Help in the Future?; Stephanie L. Zeszutek, D.O., Orange Regional Medical Center, presented on Aging and Menopause; Donald Krieff, D.O., South Nassau Communities Hospital, updated on Neurosurgery; Thomas Chan, D.O., NYITCOM, spoke on Autism - Past, Present and Future; Joseph L. Saraceno, D.O., Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, presented on Submassive Pulmonary Embolism TreatmentDean G. 2016 ROC-NY Trainee Services

On Thursday, April 1st, Stephanie LaBarbera, M.H.A., Trainee Manager, represented NYCOMEC in the exhibits of the 2016 Regional Osteopathic Convention New York (ROC-NY), held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Hauppauge, New York. Ms. LaBarbera spoke to many students and residents who were attending the event to compete in the NYSOMS poster competition. Various members of the medical society stopped by the NYCOMEC table in between lectures to learn more about NYCOMEC and its member institutions. Many were NYITCOM graduates and were impressed with how much NYCOMEC has grown over the years.  
NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine Co-Sponsored Professional Development Series

NYIT Center for Sports Medicine hosted a series of  professional development lectures on concussion management on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, in the Rockefeller Auditorium, Old Westbury Campus. NYCOMEC cosponsored the event.

The program targeted primary care and sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers. It was designed to help participants better understand the scientific basis for sports concussions and the appropriate evidence based strategies to care for the athletic population.

Submit Nominations for Leadership Positions

The AOA's bureaus, councils, and committees (B/C/Cs) play a vital role in policy development. The composition of the B/C/Cs regularly changes to ensure all voices from within this diverse profession are given the chance to contribute to AOA policy. The AOA is seeking volunteer leaders to serve on its most important governance bodies. There is the option to apply for multiple positions, but individuals must submit a completed form for each position by using the online B/C/C Nomination form. The Appointment Book lists the open positions on each of the AOA B/C/Cs.  The deadline for the all nominations is Friday, May 6, 2016. Please direct any questions regarding this process to [email protected]. National Osteopathic Medicine (NOM) Week will take place   April 17-23, 2016 . NOM Week brings the osteopathic medical profession together to focus on one common goal - increasing awareness of osteopathic medicine and DOs in communities across the country. To read more please click here.
Angelo Mascia, NYITCOM, OMS III, Becomes National COSGP Chair

The NYITCOM's Student Government Association (SGA) President,  Angelo Mascia, OMS III, was elected to become the National COSGP Chair at the annual AACOM meeting in Washington, DC, that took place on April 6 to April 9, 2016. In his new role, Dr. Mascia will be representing all students of the nation's osteopathic colleges. At the meeting, NYITCOM was also represented by Louisa Sethi, OMS IV, who serves as the COSGP's National Clinical Education Representative, and Kalliope Kyriakides, OMS II, the COSGP's 1st Vice President.  The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) is an official council of the American Association of College of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

Bernadette Riley, D.O. , South Nassau Communities Hospital, and a member of NYCOMEC's Academic Compliance Committee, published an article titled Mandating the Simulation Component to Osteopathic Family Medicine Training  in the last issue of the Osteopathic Family Physician journal. TOUCH Points Results Are Out

With more than 21,000 TOUCH Points, NYITCOM maintained its first place, for the second year in a row. TOUCH    (Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health) is a national initiative of the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP).

NYCOMEC's President Received an Honorary Membership into Omega Beta Iota

David Broder, D.O. , NYCOMEC's President, received an honorary membership into Omega Beta Iota , the National Osteopathic Political Advocacy Honor Society, at its Spring Induction Ceremony that took place on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, in Washington, D.C. The organization chose to make Dr. Broder a honorary inductee based upon his extensive commitment to medical advocacy and the osteopathic profession.  
 
At the same ceremony were inducted Sen Kowshik, student at TouroCOM-Harlem, and Angelo Mascia, student at NYITCOM. Several students from NYITCOM and both TouroCOM campuses are already members.  To read more about Omega Beta Iota please click here .

NYCOMEC Research Director Appointed to AACOM Task Force on OME & VA Academic Affiliations

David Yens, Ph.D., Research Director, NYCOMEC, was appointed to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Task Force on Osteopathic Medical Education (OME) & VA Academic Affiliations.  The task force was formed recently to help advance AACOM's efforts in support of its member institutions and graduate medical education (GME) partners in establishing and strengthening academic affiliations with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Artur Rozentsvit, Usman Aslam, and Chirag Parikh, three NYITCOM students, received research awards from the American Physiological Society and presented their research at the prestigious Experimental Biology Meeting in San Diego in the beginning of April 2016. To read more please click here.
