Reminder to All Graduate Medical Education Faculty & Staff

NYCOMEC is pleased to assist our member institutions with all documentation requirements related to contracts, registration, completion of training and verification of education. We are currently processing the trainee registration forms and hospital contracts for the new academic year (2017-2018).  For your convenience, the Registration Form can be found on our  website Please be reminded to submit them before trainees begin the academic year. 

In addition, please notify NYCOMEC of any trainee status changes, (i.e. medical leave, resignation or termination).  Please contact Stephanie LaBarbera , M.H.A., Manager of Trainee Services, with any questions or concerns.

ROC-NY 2017 Educational CME Programs

The New York State Osteopathic Medical Society held its annual Regional Osteopathic Convention-New York (ROC-NY 2017) on Thursday, April 6, to Sunday, April 9, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Long Island hotel located in Hauppauge, NY. The theme of the convention was  Embracing Change

Eight presenters were osteopathic physicians affiliated with NYCOMEC's member institutions: 
  • Lewis Bass, D.O., NYITCOM, who presented on NYS Infection Control Barrier Precautions Course
  • Thomas Chan, D.O., NYITCOM, spoke on Environmental Concerns in Pediatrics
  • Dennis Dowling, D.O., Nassau University Medical Center, spoke on The Evolution of the Still Technique: Still, Hoover, Schiowitz, Van Buskirk
  • Sharon Koehler, D.O., Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, presented on Breast Cancer: An Update on Screening and Treatment

ROC-NY 2017: NYSOMS Annual Business Meeting

Among the many lectures and meetings taking place at the annual Regional Osteopathic Convention (ROC-NY 2017) was the NYSOM Annual Business M eeting, presided by  David Broder, D.O., NYSOMS Parliamentarian.   At the meeting, NYSOMS members elected/ reelected the executive officers and directors, which included the following physicians from NYCOMEC member institutions:  Sherman Dunn, D.O. , Coney Island Hospital, Bernadette Riley, D.O., South Nassau Communities Hospital, Lawrence L. NYCOMEC Represented at ROC-NY 2017

On Friday, April 7th, NYCOMEC participated in the exhibit portion of the 2017 Regional Osteopathic Convention New York (ROC-NY). Sharon Player, Manager, Communication & Special Projects, engaged with students and residents attending the NYSOMS poster competition, informing them of the upcoming educational programs, webinars and Grand Rounds programs available to NYCOMEC member institutions. Various members of the medical society stopped by the NYCOMEC table in between lectures to learn more about NYCOMEC and its member institutions.  
NYCOMEC Member Institutions Represented at LECOM Erie Hospital Day

Stephanie LaBarbera, M.H.A., Manager of Trainee Services, NYCOMEC, represented NYCOMEC member institutions o n Friday, April 7, 2017, at the LECOM Hospital Day in Erie, Pennsylvania. The event was well attended by close to 300 first, second and third year medical students. Many students were drawn to the NYCOMEC table because of the vast amount of specialties, with the most popular being Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. Students were happy to see that the NYCOMEC brochure highlighted the programs that have received initial ACGME accreditation. 
NYCOMEC Co-Sponsored Second NYIT Global Health Grand Rounds

NYCOMEC co-sponsored the NYIT Center for Global Health's second Grand Rounds on Monday, April 3, 2017.  Kwadwo Sarpong , Chief Executive Officer, African Academies for Women taught faculty members and students about bridging the gender gap in global health with his presentation titled   Global Health: Beyond Disease.   The presentation was very well received by a close to a hundred people comprised of faculty, students and trainees.
TouroCOM Students Celebrate Doctors' Day

On March 31, 2017, students from TouroCOM - Middletown Campus surprised the college administration and faculty with delicious donuts, coffee, and a poster signed by students with notes of appreciation in celebration of Doctors' Day.
"Today they expressed their respect and appreciation to our administration and faculty by holding this Doctors Day event and presenting us with a large signed thank you card which is displayed in these pictures" said Kenneth J. Steier, D.O., M.B.A., M.P.H., Executive Dean, TouroCOM NY.

National Osteopathic Medicine (NOM) Week will take place  April 16-22, 2017. NOM Week brings the osteopathic medical profession together to focus on one common goal: increasing awareness of osteopathic medicine and D.O.s in communities across the country.

The Board of Trustees of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) announced on Mach 29, 2017, the appointment of Henry C. "Hank" Foley, Ph.D., as the fourth President of NYIT, effective June 1, 2017.

Changes Coming to COMLEX-USA Exams: NBOME Is Using Evidence-Based Research to Redesign the COMLEX-USA

To ensure that the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination-USA (COMLEX-USA) reflects the evolving practice of osteopathic medicine, the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) has developed new content and format specifications for an enhanced, competency-based examination program to be implemented with COMLEX-USA Level 3 in 2018.

Sisters of Charity Hospital's New CEO

Martin Boryszak, M.B.A., Chief Operating Officer of Sisters of Charity Hospital, Buffalo, NY, has been named the hospital's President and Chief Executive Officer, the Catholic Health Hospital System announced on March 27, 2017.

Inside Jersey Magazine's 2017 Top Hospital Results

Inside Jersey magazine and Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. have released their annual survey of top hospitals in the state of New Jersey. All NYCOMEC member institutions located in New Jersey are on top 15 overall as follows:
  • Saint Barnabas Medical Center ranked # 4 in overall more than 350 beds hospitals;
  • HackensackUMC Palisades ranked # 4 in overall 350 or fewer beds hospitals;
  • Jersey Medical Center ranked # 7 in overall 350 or fewer beds hospitals;
  • Newark Beth Israel Medical Center ranked # 9 in overall more than 350 beds hospitals;
  • Trinitas Regional Medical Center ranked # 13 in overall more than 350 beds hospitals.
The prestigious "2017 Top Hospitals in New Jersey" list is tabulated based on votes from 2,915 licensed physicians in the state.

NYSOMS Student-of-the-Year Awards Presented at ROC-NY 2017

Three students from NYCOMEC member medical schools were honored as NYSOMS' Students of the Year at the Medical Society's Annual Regional Osteopathic Convention-NY on April 7, 2017.  The awards were presented to Richard Gyi,  OMS IV, NYITCOM, Brittni Alexander, OMS II, TouroCOM - Harlem Campus, and Erawadi Singh, OMS II, TouroCOM - Middletown Campus.  

Also presented at the event were Student Scholarships, which were awarded to Angelo Mascia, OMS IV, NYITCOM and Christine Choi, OMS III, TouroCOM - Harlem Campus.
