The AOA has set new standards designed to protect trainees by ensuring they graduate from an accredited training program as programs transition to the ACGME Single Accreditation System. The standards set deadlines  for programs to either apply for ACGME accreditation or stop accepting trainees if the trainees cannot complete the program by June 30, 2020. If a program does not apply to the ACGME by the deadline, it will not be able to participate in the AOA Match the following February. Student Organizations Speak Out for Osteopathic Recognition as Programs Transition to ACGME Single Accreditation System

Angelo Mascia, OMS III, COSGP National Chair, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, and  Alex Smith, OMS III, SOMA National President, Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine,  wrote a letter on behalf of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) and Council on Student Government Presidents (COSGP) to urge all program directors to  transition their osteopathic residency programs to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation , and to pursue Osteopathic Recognition, in order to advance the osteopathic profession and promote the value of osteopathic medicine in health care.

The letter cited several points supporting their request, including the growing number of allopathic programs applying for Osteopathic Recognition to attract top notch osteopathic applicants and a  recent AACOM survey demonstrating that 70% of osteopathic medical students prefer to seek osteopathic residency training.
