Deadline for Residency Programs to Apply
|
New AOA standards set deadlines for programs to either apply for ACGME accreditation or stop accepting trainees, if the trainees cannot complete the program by June 30, 2020. If a program does not apply to the ACGME by the deadline, it will not be able to participate in the AOA Match the following February. See the full chart to learn your program's deadline.

NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine Co-Sponsor Professional Development Series
The program targets primary care and sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers. It anticipates being approved for 4.5 AOA category 1A CME credits for physicians, 4.5 BOC category A CEU credits for athletic trainers, and 4.5 NYS Physical Therapy Continuing Education credits.
Preregistration is required. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. There is no registration fee for NYCOMEC trainees.

NYCOMEC OPTI AOA Accreditation Inspection:
April 19-20, 2016
On Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20, 2016, NYCOMEC will undergo its AOA OPTI accreditation inspection.
The members of the AOA inspection team include David Plundo, D.O., Team Leader (Edward Via COM), Joyce Jadwin, Ph. D., (CORE OPTI), Lilia Wilson, MBA, MPM (Midwestern University) and Rico Blanco (AOA Staff).
On April 19, the inspectors will begin their survey at the NYITCOM Old Westbury Campus, meeting with the Board of Directors, various committees and other constituencies. We thank each of you who have indicated that you will join us at various meetings during the review.
On April 20, the inspection team will conduct a hospital-based visit at Nassau University Medical Center, meeting with DMEs/Program Directors and Trainees. Special thanks to NUMC's leadership and staff for their participation in our OPTI survey.

The Education Committee Meeting and Faculty Development Webinar
The NYCOMEC Education Committee met on
Wednesday, March 16, 2016, in the Rockefeller Auditorium at NYITCOM, Old Westbury Campus.
It was followed by a faculty development webinar titled
ACGME Approach to Resident, Program and Institutional Evaluations.
The presenter,
Henry Rosenberg, M.D
., Director of Medical Education and Clinical Research, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, focused on the ACGME's Milestones evaluation method, structuring the Clinical Competence and Program Evaluation committees and defining their functions, resident and faculty surveys, ongoing reporting requirements, and understanding the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER).

NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series: the First Webinar
The first webinar of the NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series was a great success!
On Wednesday, March 16, Theodore Flaum, D.O., Assistant Professor, OMM Department, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, conducted a presentation titled Back Pain to an audience of close to 100 faculty, trainees, students and staff from several NYCOMEC member institutions.
The webinar series will continue every other Wednesday, offering 30-minute presentations on a wide range of osteopathic medicine topics. The webinars feature a variety of prominent guest speakers whose didactic sessions are designed for faculty, trainees, students, and staff. For a schedule of upcoming webinars, please click here.

Stephanie LaBarbera, M.H.A., represented NYCOMEC at the Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine Hospital Day in Parker, Colorado, on Friday, March 11, 2016. Over 120 third year medical students attended the event and many of them expressed interest in finding out more information about NYCOMEC residency programs.

Application Process for Combined Programs

The AOA and the ACGME handle combined/ integrated programs differently. The ACGME does not accredit combined programs, but allows access to the ACGME system, and these programs must follow a different process when applying. NYITCOM and TouroCOM Students' Successful Residency Match
Fourth year osteopathic medicine students from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) - Harlem Campus have been matched to highly competitive residency programs throughout the country and in the New York metropolitan area.
"As in the past two years, we are pleased to inform you that the match/placement rate for the Class of 2016 graduates is 100%! Palisades Medical Center Officially Changed Its Name to HackensackUMC Palisades.
Palisades Medical Center and Hackensack University Health Network have signed an affiliation agreement to collaborate and expand clinical programs and services, further improving the high-quality medical care Palisades provides patients in Hudson and southern Bergen County. Barnabas Health System Buys Hockey
Barnabas Health has secured the naming rights for the New Jersey Devils' practice facility, which will be known as Barnabas Health Hockey House. Barnabas plans to hold health education events at the venue and at 33 rinks around New Jersey. The shift to value-based payments, which require systems to manage populations, appears to make naming deals that raise the profile of health care brands more enticing. To read more, please click

NYITCOM and TouroCom Students Traveled to Albany for "Advocacy Day"
On March 8, 2016, NYITCOM students joined students from TouroCOM to participate in the annual Medical Society of the State of New York Advocacy Day in Albany, event sponsored by the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS). The students visited the office of NY State Senator Carl Marcellino, whose district includes the Old Westbury Campus, and State Senator Kenneth Lavalle, the Chair of the Senate Committee on Higher Education.
