NYCOMEC Grand Rounds 


On Wednesd ay, May 18, 2016, more than 150 faculty and trainees  attended NYCOMEC's semi-annual Grand Rounds, featuring programs on practice management, medical knowledge, and professionalism. 

Neil Vora, M.D. Career Epidemiology Field Officer, CDC and Director of Special Porjects for the Division of Disease Control, NYC Dept. of Health & Mental Hygiene (NY)

The keynote speaker, Neil Vora, M.D., Career Epidemiology Field Officer, Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Director of Special Projects for the Division of Disease Control, NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, gave a tim ely briefing on the Zika virus, including an overview of the CDC and NYC Health Department's response to the current Zika outbreak, methods for reporting diseases, and how physicians can pursue a career in public health.

    
Lewis Bass, D.O.
Lewis Bass, D.O., gave an insightful presentation on the legal, medical and financial aspects of running a medical practice. He also discussed the benefits of using practice consultants to maximize success and encouraged physicians to continually monitor the future direction of medical payment systems.

Melanie Thelian, CPC, CPC-1
Melanie Thelian, CPC, CPC-1, presented an overview on Documentation and Coding Basics. Her discussion included documentation basics, EMR pitfalls, current procedural terminology, ICD-10-CM, and HCPS Codes.


Daniel Van Arsdale, D.O. 
Daniel Van Arsdale, D.O., discussed the impact of OMT on the interoceptive nervous system, specifically how OMT can positively use the intero-ceptive nervous system to change clinical outcomes. 






Anthony Sampino, D.O.
In the final presentation,
Anthony Sampino, D.O. described the potential role of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) methods in reducing unintended pregnancy rates, how to select appropriate candidates for LARC methods, and how to identify management strategies for clinical problems and patient concerns related to use of LARC methods. 
    
NYCOMEC's next semi-annual Grand Rounds will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Please mark your calendars. 
NYCOMEC Poster Competition 

NYCOMEC held its 15th Annual Research Poster Competition, in conjunction with its Spring Grand Rounds on May 18 at the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel. The annual competition recognizes the excellent research efforts that are occurring at NYCOMEC-affiliated training programs. Over 50 posters were reviewed by a panel of judges, who bestowed awards to first, second and third place winners in two categories: experimental research and clinical case studies.

First Place ($500 prize): Soham Chaudhari, D.O., Intern at HackensackUMC Palisades, presented on Management of Radiation Dermatitis

Second Place ($250 prize) : Christopher Chum, D.O., Internal Medicine Resident at Coney Island Hospital , presented on  Utility of CT Imaging in the Evaluation of Patients with Non-traumatic Abdominal Pain

Third Place ($125 prize): Melissa Amberger, D.O., Surgery Resident at St. Barnabas Hospital, presented on Predicting Pathologically Complicated Appendicitis Using Ubiquitous Clinical and Laboratory Data

CLINICAL CASE STUDIES:

First Place ($350 prize):  Avindra Ramnarain, D.O., Emergency Medicine Resident at  Orange Regional Medical Center, presented on  Lethal Pharyngitis: An Early Sign of Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Second Place ($200 prize):  Matthew Mavroson, D.O., Internal Medicine Resident at  Coney Island Hospital, presented on Myxedema Madness: Reversible Psychosis in an Undiagnosed Hypothyroid Patient.

Third Place ($100 prize):  Jennifer Gibbs, D.O., OB/GYN Resident at  Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, presented on  Underlying Appendicitis Leading to Charioamnionitis in Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes?

The Competition was judged by a panel of volunteers under the direction of David Yens, Ph.D., NYCOMEC's Director of Research. NYCOMEC's Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Meeting

NYCOMEC's Board of Directors and Strategic Planning meeting took place on May 10, 2016. As part of its ongoing strategic planning, the Board Executive Committee will host a 2-day planning retreat in the fall of 2016. Information will be disseminated as soon as plans are set.



The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for September 28, 2016 .

NYCOMEC welcomes a new member to its Board of Directors, Patricia Salkin, J.D. Ms. Salkin will serve as Board representative for TouroCOM.  Ms. Salkin is Dean and Professor of Law at T ouro College Jacob D. NYCOMEC Trainee OMM Workshop: Hands on OMM Bootcamp for NYCOMEC Trainees

An OMM Workshop, taught by the NYITCOM's Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) faculty and designed for the NYCOMEC interns, residents and fellows, will take place o n   Thursday, July 14, 2016 , from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the OMM laboratory located on the first floor in Serota Building, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, Old Westbury Campus. 

The workshop will review osteopathic diagnosis in the clinical setting and cover integration of high yield osteopathic manipulative techniques that will be incorporated into patient care across all specialties.

Touro College Research Day: ER Reduces Radiation Exposure in Children with Suspected Appendicitis

Physicians can safely reduce the use of computed tomography (CT) scans in children who have a suspected appendicitis by performing an ultrasound first, according to preliminary results of a retrospective study presented at Touro College Research Day. To read more please click here.
NYITCOM Research Program Seeks to Develop "Fit Physicians"

Researchers at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) are trying to determine whether or not activity monitors, exercise, and monthly wellness seminars help medical students improve fitness, reduce stress, and score higher on tests?  The "Fit Physician" study will measure students' physical activity, academic scores, sleep patterns, and stress levels against a control group and a third group that will wear fitness trackers, but not attend the wellness or exercise programs.
