Good Afternoon,
May 5-9 marks OSHA's National Safety Stand-Down week to help prevent falls on job sites. Companies can use this time to reinforce their commitment to safety, raise awareness, and evaluate your current fall protection practices. This month's resource is tips to help your companies plan an effective Stand-down on job sites across New York City, Westchester, and Fairfield, Ct.
Start Early
- Start Early- Identify who will coordinate the stand down. If you have multiple job sites, assign a point person on each site.
- Invite participants- Encourage other Owners, General Contractors, Subcontractors and all employees on the jobsite to the Stand-Down Event.
- Review your current Program- Ensure your own program and practices are up-to-date and effective.
Topics to Cover Include
- Falls from ladders
- Leading Edges
- Aerial Lifts
- Walking or Working Surfaces
- Roofs
- Scaffolds
- Stairs
- Floors
- Structural Steel
Evaluate and Improve
- Is your company meeting its safety goals?
- Have there been any accidents or near misses?
- Are employees on the jobsite familiar with the company's fall protection procedures?
- Is training up-to-date?
- Is the PPE and equipment up to industry standard?
Plan the Event
- Create a presentation, activity, or hands on demo
- Tailor it to your present workforce for max participation
- Incorporate the company's safety goals and expectations
Schedule and Promote
- Ensure the stand-down is at a convenient time like lunch or break.
- Promote it via prior tool box talks, email, text, and on the jobsite
Stand-Down Meeting Execution
- Make it interactive and positive by asking for suggestions, tips, experiences, etc.
