NYECA Safety Topic of the Month-Construction Suicide Prevention Week

Good morning,

Next week, Construction Suicide Prevention Week will be held from September 8–12, 2025. Construction sites across the country commit time to talk openly about mental health, reduce stigma, and connect workers to lifesaving resources.

Construction consistently ranks among the industries with the highest suicide rates. Factors like seasonal work, long hours, travel, chronic pain or injury and a “tough it out” culture can increase risk. Talking about it, looking out for each other, and knowing where to get help saves lives. The goal is to raise awareness that suicide is preventable, equip every worker with simple tools to recognize warning signs and start supportive conversations, and connect everyone to confidential, 24/7 help.

What can your company do to participate?

  • Toolbox Talks that cover mental health and suicide prevention.
  • Posters/Messages in all areas of the worksite that encourage help and share facts on mental health.
  • Training on starting a conversation.
  • Remind the workforce of EAP programs available.
  • Keep the conversation going year-round.

Suicide Prevention Mental Health in Construction - Safety Standdown

NYECA is proud to support Construction Suicide Prevention Week and encourages all members to take part in these important conversations. As part of our efforts, we have teamed up with Local Union No.3, IBEW and the JIB to offer 988 hard hat stickers to anyone in the industry. If you are interested, please reach out to the Association Office. Together, we can continue to build a culture of safety that protects not only our bodies, but also our minds.

If you or someone you know may be at risk, call or text 988 for immediate help.

There are several toolbox talks on this topic in the Safety Meeting app and eSafetyline website that are included in your NYECA membership. The safety website is being updated and will

We encourage anyone interested in participating in the NYECA Safety Committee to reach out to evangelista@nyeca.org.
