ISRAEL AND NYHS
Recapping Yom HaZikaron
Monday, May 1st, was Yom HaZikaron. Yom HaZikaron is Israel's Memorial Day for fallen IDF soldiers and terror victims. At NYHS, we honored this day by bringing in 5 people who have served in the IDF to participate in a panel discussion with our students. The 5 people included:
- Josh Voss (NYHS 2011), 24 years old, Sharpshooter in the Paratrooper Brigade
- Taeer Avnon, 21 years old, Artillery Instructor in the Artillery Corps
- Udi Asraf (StandWithUs Northwest Shaliach), 27 years old, Chemical Engineer in the south
- Gabrielle Richmond, 22 years old, Combat Fitness Instructor in the Search and Rescue Brigade of the Homefront Command
- Uriel Azose, 29 years old, Commander in Combat Engineering - Landmines and Explosives

Our students had the opportunity to hear about each of their experiences -- how they decided (if they weren't Israeli) to join the army, what their service was like, and their personal connections to Yom HaZikaron. Over the course of an hour, the conversation consisted of lighthearted stories about Israeli bureaucracy, profound camaraderie, pushing oneself to the limit, tensions of wartime, and the reality of loss. After the panel, students also got to speak with our guests on-on-one to ask their own questions. Some of our students just wanted to say thank you, others plan on going to the army through the same program as some of our visitors. Everyone came away feeling a meaningful connection to Yom HaZikaron.
Thank you -- Josh, Taeer, Udi, Gabrielle and Uriel -- for your service in the IDF and for making Yom HaZikaron so meaningful for us.
Recapping Yom HaAtzmaut
Tuesday, May 2nd, was Yom HaAtzmaut! This year Israel celebrated its 69th birthday. As is tradition, NYHS held its annual Israel Walk. This walk is always a highlight of the year as students, staff and faculty light up Mercer Island in blue and white. We walked from NYHS to the main intersection at 40th and back again, all the while singing, chanting, holding signs, and waving at cars. When we returned to school, we were met with a delicious falafel lunch by Dalia Amon.

GLOBAL UNITY TORAH
Claim a letter in this unique Torah not with money, but with acts of kindness
To honor the 50th anniversary of the 1967 reunification of Jerusalem, The Afikim Foundation in cooperation with the Israel Ministry of Diaspora Affairs has commissioned the writing of a the Global Unity Torah, which you can participate in by doing acts of kindness!
NYHS has reserved a block of letters, the full Ten Commandments that appear in Sefer Devarim, Parashat Vaetchanan. We invite you to participate in this amazing project as part of the NYHS community.
Click here to claim your letter! Our ability to do acts of kindness for those around us is unlimited. Whether it is holding the door open, making an extra trip to the airport, donating money, or making food for a friend who is under the weather. We encourage you to claim as many letters as you can do good deeds.
At this point we have collectively completed over 430 acts of kindness! Below is everyone in our NYHS community who has participated so far. Over 130 people! Names in bold participated most recently. We've got 723 letters in our reserved block so keep up the kindness!
Learn more about the project here!
