View from the Road

It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things. - Theodore Roosevelt

Growing up, my brothers and I would visit our dad every other weekend during the school year. More than a few times, we spent the entire weekend in the doctor's lounge watching TV, doing schoolwork, and wearing scrubs that were too big as pajamas. Our dad was an OB/GYN and when it was time (and our dad was on call), he was at the hospital and so were we.

Labor of any type is something that must be done to move forward. We need to do it to improve, to maintain what we have, and to bring about something new. While tired at the end of a hard day, that feeling of accomplishment is almost a reward in itself, especially when we see the results of our labor.

As you celebrated Labor Day on the first, you may have not stopped to remember those who helped you throughout your life by their own hard labor. Do so now. Thank your parents (especially your mom) for bringing you into the world. Thank your teachers and mentors for helping you down your own highway of life. Thank your friends and family, for being a part of your journey. They may not be with you, but they are always a part of you. Together we all can pave the road to a great tomorrow.
