If summer had one defining scent, it'd definitely be the smell of barbecue. - Katie Lee

Summer is the time for road work. Maybe the defining scent should be asphalt. July is the optimum month for chip seals and paving. Of course, this depends on not getting rain every other day. A good rule of thumb for chip seals is to look at the farmers who grow hay. If the weather is good for harvesting hay, it is good for doing a chip seal. But like those farmers, we sometimes must choose less than optimum days.
Over July, we are finishing our plans for the next fiscal year which starts on October 1. This includes the Bridge Conference in Saratoga Springs and the workshops for this fall and in 2026. Meanwhile, we are still doing our summer foundational webinars and answering your questions. Please contact us if we can help with a technical issue.
To me, summer in New York State is also a time to stop for an ice cream cone in a small town. Every place has a local stand that is not just a landmark but is the heart and soul of the community. We cannot get to those roadside stands without your vital work keeping highways maintained. The scent of a community barbecue, the taste of ice cream from a local stand, the sights of forests, fields, waterfalls, and lakes are brought to everyone by the scent of asphalt and the hard work of highway departments across the state. Thank you.
