December 2024

View from the Road

If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people. - Confucius

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something. - Neil Gaiman

As we end another year it is always good to look back to see what we have accomplished and look forward to see what is up next. In 2024 we continued providing training and answering your questions. If we made mistakes, it was because we were trying something new.

In 2024 we held 42 workshops, 2 statewide conferences, spoke at 22 invited sessions, and answered 450 of your questions via the phone, email, or in-person. We now have 19 Community Corners sheets available answering questions the public has about roads and streets and what highway and Public Works Departments do. We had a good year and look forward to an even better 2025.

Our 2025 Spring workshop schedule is out, and you can sign up for seven different workshops. You could also join us online for a foundational webinar over the winter. We will also be scheduling eight or nine work zone workshops across the state as part of the work zone equipment grant. We should have that schedule ready just after the start of the year.

We look forward to 2025 and with your help, we know it will be a good year.

Expand Your Toolbox: Discover the NDE Techniques for Testing Material Integrity

December 12

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EST

During a routine inspection of an aging bridge, engineers discover visible cracks in the support beams, raising serious concerns about structural integrity. How can they assess the materials without causing further damage? The solution lies in Non- Destructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques. NDE is a technique used to assess the properties of materials and identify defects without damaging them. For inspectors, NDE is similar to how a doctor uses an X-ray to check for a broken bone instead of resorting to invasive surgery.
