View from the Road

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you! - Dr. Seuss

Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present. - Bil Keane

One cool thing about an electronic newsletter (as opposed to our quarterly printed, Nuggets & Nibbles) is that we can decide exactly when you will receive it (or at least when we send it out). Some people prefer a printed newsletter since it comes as a bit of a present in the mail. Whether you like a printed or electronic notice is a preference of taste. I like both because they serve different needs.

Right now, we are hosting the 78th Annual School for Highway Superintendents, the Highway School. If you are here in Ithaca, welcome. We know you will learn something you can take home from the presenters or the other attendees. Try to find one idea you can take home and implement. This could be how to improve communication between the highway department and the elected board, why it is important to keep good roads in good shape, what defines a road-by-use, or how to calibrate your spreaders for snow and ice control.

If you are not here, put the 79th Highway School on your calendar. It will be held June 1-3, 2026. Creating a network of colleagues and learning from each other makes the school worthwhile by itself. Add in the value of the program and every dollar you spend in Ithaca will pay for itself in improving the quality and safety of your roads and streets.
