Manufacturers from around New York State are answering the call to fight COVID-19. Some are existing medical manufacturers. Others were not part of the medical industry – until now. Here’s a look at what’s happening around the state.
Capital Region
Precision Valve Automation (PVA) is a robotics and factory automation company that specializes in the application of adhesives, sealants, and coatings. Now the Cohoes manufacturer is using its expertise to develop ventilators.
Long Island
COVID-19 test results in 15 minutes? Henry Schein, a Long Island-based healthcare supplier (and a Fortune Magazine’s “World’s Most Admired Companies”) says yes! Their Standard Q COVID-19 Rapid Testis being introduced for use in doctors' offices.
Finger Lakes
Based out of Rochester, Hickey Freeman is a luxury men’s clothing manufacturer with over 120 years’ experience. They have begun manufacturing masks for their local healthcare provider, with plans to produce “sew-at-home” kits for qualified volunteers to increase their capacity.
Some research has shown that the interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor is involved in severe cases of COVID-19. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals manufacturers a rheumatoid arthritis treatment that targets this receptor. The Eastview-based company is currently conducting global testing as a potential COVID-19 treatment.
Clothing companies aren’t the only ones who are getting masks to the front lines. Duggal Visual Solutions and Bednark Studio Inc., graphic display companies in Brooklyn, have teamed up to make masks as well. They’re planning on producing 360,000 masks.
North Country
Knowlton Technologies is a world-leader in the design, accelerated prototyping, and manufacture of wet-laid nonwovens. The Watertown company is currently in the development phase to produce ASTM F2100 material for surgical face masks that could supply mask manufacturers during the COVID-19 emergency.
