Projects, Communities, + People in the News NYSEDC and the Business Council have 'growing concerns' with clean energy policies. Organizations say that climate goals could lead to "unintended consequences" affecting energy prices and the state's economy. Refresco Beverage will invest $13 million to acquire a facility in Dunkirk, New York to expand its warehousing and distribution capabilities. Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse region to become a federally designated semiconductor tech hub. The three cities collaborated on a proposal — the New York Semiconductor Manufacturing and Research Technology Innovation Corridor Consortium — to secure the federal funding to create a tech corridor. The U.S. Department of Defense awarded $40 million to the Northeast Regional Defense Technology Hub (NORDTech) the consortium includes NY CREATES' Albany Nanotech, University at Albany, Cornell University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and IBM. The University of Rochester received nearly $18 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to design and prototype key technologies for EP-OPAL, a new facility dedicated to the study of ultrahigh-intensity laser-matter interactions. Binghamton University's New Energy New York project has received another jolt with a $1.5 million grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). Additional funding from federal, state and local sources brings the total to $3 million. Mohawk Valley Community College is now offering pre-apprenticeship courses for women interested in entering the manufacturing industry. The Real Life Rosie's Program introduces women to manufacturers techniques and procedures. The Genesee County Fairgrounds held its fifth annual Glow With Your Hands manufacturing workshop. 1,100 students from 30 school districts in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming counties attended the event. Variety reports that Vornado Realty Trust has lined up partners to redevelop Pier 94 on Manhattan's West Side as a film and TV studio. Hudson Pacific Properties and Blackstone will back the project, as well as the City of New York, and New York City Economic Development Corporation. The project comes as New York has become a major destination for film and television production thanks to its generous tax incentives, and this will be the only studio on the island of Manhattan. | Read the full story at Variety.
