A $120 million expansion at the HP Hood plant is expected to add nearly 50 jobs at the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park. Empire State Development announced the expansion Thursday. The expansion will include new processing systems and upgrades allowing the company to increase its production capacity for additional extended-shelf-life beverages. | See the story at the Daily News
Strober: Resolving Long Island’s next-gen housing crisis starts with IDAs. Building multifamily residential housing is a business. That reality means that unless the region’s development community can phase in the property taxes, housing units will not be affordable for our next generation of Long Islanders. Deferring that immediate full tax bill comes through programs offered by industrial development agencies that are under the authority of Long Island’s various towns and our two counties. Some call those programs “incentives” for developers to build. They are not. They are, in fact, essential if we are to meet the ever-growing housing crisis that virtually everyone acknowledges is threatening our ability to attract and keep next-gen Long Islanders as well as allow our seniors to age in place. The Champlain Hudson Power Express is a high-voltage, direct-current power line being built to bring electricity from Quebec to New York City -- buried underground and underwater along the way. Once completed, the line will bring up to 1,250 megawatts of electricity to the New York City area -- enough power for about 1 million homes. | Read more at the Times Union
Wells Enterprises has announced plans for the expansion of its Dunkirk manufacturing facility, which would bring more than 200 new jobs to the Dunkirk community. The Genesee Valley Pre-Apprenticeship Program was created in 2021 to assist companies in the greater Rochester and GLOW Region (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties) with recruitment and training for one of the region’s largest industries. "This program continues to train workers of all ages, skill levels and abilities for a wide array of high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing," said Bob Coyne, Executive Director of the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA). | Learn more about the program
In 2021, the County of Oswego Industrial Development Agency (IDA) bought 185 acres of land adjacent to its existing 135-acre industrial park, off Route 481 in the town of Schroeppel. As it turned out, it’s just 10 miles from the site where Micron Technology plans to construct a massive semiconductor plant. Economic development officials want to double the size of the industrial park and make shovel-ready sites for companies, particularly the businesses Micron is expected to attract to the area. | Oswego County News Now has the latest here
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded a $4 million grant to the Port of Oswego to improve rail infrastructure and purchase new cargo handling equipment. The announcement was made on Aug. 22 by US Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, who said the funding will contribute to increased export capacity and 19 new jobs. | Read more at World-Grain

In Memoriam - Remembering Jim Griffin
We lost a giant last week and what a profound loss this is for NYSEDC Board, Staff and members, past and present. James "Jim" Griffin will be remembered for his leadership and transformational impact he had in the field of economic development. Jim was formerly the Executive Director of the City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency, formerly the President of the Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce and headed both entities for 48 years. He was also a consultant and, for a period of time, was the Executive Director of the Steuben County Industrial Development Agency. Jim was also a Board Member of Steuben-Chemung-Schuyler Workforce New York; Chairman
Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Corporation; and the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad. Among the many honors upon his retirement was the designation of “Griffin Junction” where two rail lines intersect near Bath, NY symbolizing the lifetime of efforts by Jim to bring people and ideas together to get things done. Jim was formerly the Chairman of the American Economic Development Council. Past Chairman of the International Economic Development Council - Honorary Life Member and Fellow Member; and a Certified Economic Developer for the past 30 years; Past Chairman & Member of Board of Directors of the New York State Economic Development Council – New York State Developer of the Year 1991 serving his final years in an Emeritus status. The Bigger Picture
Phase 1 Complete - U.S. EDA Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs)

The U.S. EDA received a total of 378 applications from 48 states and 3 territories for Phase 1 of the Tech Hub Competition. Applicants requested more than $75 million in Federal funding for strategy development grants across the 181 Strategy Development Grant applications.

EDA is currently reviewing all 378 applications and will announce which applicants will receive Tech Hub designations in Fall 2023. The designated Tech Hubs will be invited to apply for Phase 2 funding after they are announced in the Fall.

Lower the cost of borrowing with the Linked Deposit Program

The Linked Deposit Program (LDP) lowers the cost of borrowing and assists eligible small businesses and MWBEs to expand or improve their operations by providing an interest rate reduction on business loans. The actual reduction is based on the participating lenders 4-year CD rate and can be up to 2 or 3 percent depending on the business and project. The program offers a business substantial savings on their cost of capital, especially in this high interest rate environment.
