Fall 2018 State Championships
The Fall Championships began on Halloween weekend with the Girls Tennis State Championships (recapped in the November edition of NYSPHSAA News). Championships continued until Thanksgiving weekend. Here's a recap of the NYSPHSAA State Championships for Fall 2018.
Cross Country Championships
The 2018 NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships were held Saturday, November 10 at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island.

State Champs were crowned in eight individual races for boys and girls, along with team champs for both boys and girls.

Girls Soccer Championships
Once again in 2018, the greater Cortland area played host to NYSPHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships.

Semifinals were played on Saturday, November 10 and the finals were played on Sunday, November 11.

Boys Soccer Championships
Middletown played host to the 2018 NYSPHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships.

Semifinals were played on Saturday, November 10 and the finals were played on Sunday. November 11.

Field Hockey Championships
The 2018 NYSPHSAA Field Hockey Championships had a new home this Fall, Williamsville North High School in Section VI.

This was the first year, of a three year commitment, that Williamsville North hosted the event. Semifinals were played on Saturday, November 10 and the finals were played on Sunday, November 11.

Girls Swimming and Diving Championships
Ithaca College hosted the 2018 NYSPHSAA Girls Swmming and Diving State Championships on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17.

Boys Volleyball Championships
For the first time the Albany Capital Center hosted the NYSPHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships.

Pool play and Championship matches were all played on Saturday, November 17.

Girls Volleyball Championships
The Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls once again hosted the NYSPHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships.

Pool Play started on Saturday, November 17 and Championship matches were played on Sunday, November 18th.

Football Championships
The Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University was once again the host for the NYSPHSAA football championships.

Three State Championship games were played on Friday, November 23 and two more were played on Saturday, November 24.

Fall 2018 Community Service Challenge Champions Announced
On December 12, NYSPHSAA announced the Fall 2018 Community Service Challenge Champions. Two teams were selected by the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Champions for this season.

The girls volleyball team from Canandaigua Academy and the boys volleyball team from Eastport-South Manor were chosen for their volunteer work in their communities. All the information about the teams can be found by clicking here.

Winter submissions for the Community Service Challenge are now being accepted. The deadline to submit is Monday, March 4.
Fall 2018 Scholar-Athlete Teams and
Individuals Honored
This Fall, NYSPHSAA recognized 3,444 Scholar-Athlete teams and 46,549 individuals. A total of 632 schools across the state participated in the Scholar-Athlete program.

The Winter Scholar-Athlete submission will open on Monday, February 3 and the deadline to submit is Monday, March 11.
2018 Excelsior Award Winner
NYSPHSAA and CSEA are pleased to announce the 2018 Excelsior Award Winner, Mike Gunn from Leavittown Public Schools. Gunn was honored at the State Football Championships in the Carrier Dome.

Nominate for the Spirit of Sport Award
The NFHS has developed its National High School Spirit of Sport Award, which will be awarded to eight section winners as well as one national winner. The recipient must be an individual from a high school that is a member of an NFHS-member athletic or activity association.

The recipient could be a coach, athletic administrator, administrator, contest official, trainer, student-athlete or any others associated with the school or the school s athletic program.

This award seeks to recognize those individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletics. The award may be given in recognition of a specific act or for an activity of longer duration.

For example, it could be awarded to an individual (or group) that:

  • has demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship and/or citizenship in playing the game as it should be played;

  • has exceeded normal expectations in assisting others within the school or community; or

  • has overcome adversity or a challenging circumstance.

In the instance of a student, that student must be in good academic standing within his or her respective high school. Among the qualifying criteria that will be used are the student s grade-point average, the activities in which he or she is involved, and community involvement. Other candidates should possess similar positive character traits, such as a high level of integrity and ethics.

The nomination must be for something that occurred between January 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019. Nominated individuals do not necessarily need to still be enrolled in high school at the time of the nomination.

Free Hazing Prevention Course
For the 2018-19 school year, NYSPHSAA is proud to offer all its member schools a free hazing prevention course.

The course is presented by Hazing Prevention.org and AliveTek, in conjunction with NYSPHSAA.
