March 2018
Winter 2018 Championships in the Books
The Winter Championships actually began in January with the first ever Wrestling Dual Meet Championships, won by Mount Sinai and Wantagh (recapped in February edition of NYSPHSAA News)

There were two regional championships held this winter. The Frontier/Lake Shore/Orchard Park girls hockey team won the championship held at SUNY Oswego. The regional rifle Championships were held at West Point and all the results can be found here:
Wrestling State Championships
The 2018 NYSPHSAA Wrestling State Championships were once again held at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Nearly 500 student-athletes took part in the two-day event. In all 30 state champs were crowned in division one and division two.

Skiing State Championships
The 2018 NYSPHSAA Skiing Championships were held at two sites again this year.

Because of warm weather the Nordic events were held at Gore Mountain, while the Alpine events were held at Bristol Mountain.

Boys Swimming and Diving Championships
The Nassau Aquatic Center was once again the host of the Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships.

Over the two-day event, state champs were crowned in 11 swimming events and the diving state championship.

Gymnastics Championships
Cold Spring Harbor High School hosted the 2018 Girls Gymnastics State Championships again this year.

The one day event was packed with the best gymnasts the state has to offer.

Cheerleading Championships
A packed house at the SRC Arena and Events Center in Syracuse saw a full day of fantastic competition.

Five teams were crowned state champs for the 2018 season. For a complete list of the Cheerleading results click here:
Indoor Track and Field Championships
The Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex hosted the 2018 Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second straight year on Staten Island.

Boys and Girls Bowling Championships
The 2018 NYSPHSAA Boys and Girls State Bowling Championships might have been the biggest and best ever.

The event was held at the OnCenter in Syracuse where the USBC had just finished constructing a 48 lane championship caliber venue for their upcoming event.

NYPHSAA bowlers were the first competitors to use the state of the art facility. This years tournament was the first to feature a division one and division two format, which allowed more student-athletes to qualify for the NYSPHSAA State Championship.

Ice Hockey Championships
The Boys Ice Hockey Championships were held at the HARBORCENTER in Buffalo for the second straight year.

Over the two-day tournament, four semifinals and two championship games were played with Victor of Section V winning the D-I title, and Sweet Home of Section VI winning the D-2 championship.
Girls Basketball Championships
For the 23rd straight year Hudson Valley Community College hosted the NYSPHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships.

15 games were played over the course of the three day tournament. The five state champs for the 2018 season are:

C) Millbrook (9)
D) Delaware Academy (4)
Boys Basketball Championships
On the boys side, the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena hosted the championship for a second straight year.

B) Mekeel Christian (2)
C) Lake George (2)
D) East (6)

We had great success this winter with SnapChat at our championships.

Our championship logos were viewed more than 536,000 times by people using SnapChat.
February Edition of NYSPHSAA Captains Club
Did you miss the February edition of the NYSPHSAA Captains Club, brought to you by the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association?

We introduced you to Jasper Koota, of Delaware Academy in Section IV. Jasper is a member of two varsity teams for the Bulldogs, serves on the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has overcome more obstacles than most.

Winter 2018 Scholar-Athletes
The Winter 2018 Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals were announced on March 20th.

This winter, NYSPHSAA recognized 2,336 Scholar-Athlete teams and 31,072 individuals. The figures represent a 13.73% (282 more teams) and 5.15% (1,521 individuals) increase compared to the number of honorees for the winter 2017 season.

Recap of the February
Executive Committee Meeting
At the February Executive Committee meeting some important action items were voted on and approved by the membership.

The following items were approved:

-The five classification cut off numbers

-The 2018-19 school enrollment numbers

-Utica Academy of Science (Section III) was placed in the Center State Conference

-Adjustments to the baseball regional rotation to prevent byes directly to the state semifinals in class D

-Game ending procedures in baseball with section and league approval

-Markers can no longer provide rulings at the Girls Golf State Championships

  • Get your voice heard on what matters in your community and what problems should be addressed.
  • Learn effective problem solving, critical thinking, and project management skills.
  • Strengthen your academic and social skills.
  • Make academic content more relevant and practical…you get to use what you’re learning!
  • Learn about potential careers by completing a project in collaboration with a community organization.
  • Meet amazing people that you wouldn’t ordinarily get to meet. They’ll stretch the way you think about the world.
  • Gain a sense of accomplishment.

Deadline to apply is May 1st
Sportsmanship Promotion Survey
The Sportsmanship Promotion Survey is designed to assess how schools are promoting positive sportsmanship within their athletic departments. This survey is a tool that can be used by athletic administrators to examine policies and procedures that can be used to promote positive sportsmanship. 

All schools that complete the survey will receive a sportsmanship certificate. The sportsmanship committee will then choose schools from each section to receive a plaque. Those applications will be evaluated to determine a sportsmanship promotion banner award winner!  

Deserving schools will be recognized by the NYSPHSAA and honored at the Central Committee Meeting.

Football Championship Bids Being Accepted
NYSPHSAA is currently accepting bids to host the State Football Championship semifinals and finals. Click on the links below to submit a bid. Deadline to submit is March 27th  




If your venue is interested in hosting the State Semifinals, or State Championships please submit a bid.

There are positions open for the 2018-19 academic year on the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The following positions are open:

Section I - 1 rising junior (male or female), 1 rising senior (male or female)
Section 2 - 1 rising junior (male)
Section III - 1 rising junior (male or female), 1 rising senior (male or female)
Section IV - 1 rising junior (female)
Section V - 1 rising junior (male)
Section VI - 1 rising junior (female)
Section VII - 1 rising junior (male)
Section VIII - 1 rising junior (male)
Section IX - 1 rising junior (male)
Section X - 1 rising junior (male or female), 1 rising senior (male or female)
Section XI - 1 rising junior (female)

Notes: 
*Rising junior = Sophomore as of March 2018
*Rising senior = Junior as of March 2018
*Some Sections do not have any positions available due to the current juniors opting to remain on the committee for their senior year.
