"Welcome to our Fall edition of the New York State Radiological Society Newsletter!
As our new president, it is with much appreciation that on behalf of all of our members that we thank Dr. Atul Gupta who recently concluded his term as President. Under Atul’s leadership, the NYRSRS has made numerous accomplishments benefiting our professions. These include:
- Successful opposition to legislation detrimental to our patients and practices including the expansion of the non-radiologists (more on this later in the newsletter) that would place our patients at risk from practitioners without our specialty’s expertise in radiation and radiation safety.
- The award of the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Chapter Grant resulted in the creation of a set of short videos to increase the visibility and understanding of the importance of our profession and to highlight what the NYSRS can do for our members
- The awarding of several grants from the NYSRS Foundation to our members and members-in-training investing in our leaders of the future.
- New committees for ethics and nuclear medicine and many new members on our existing committees.
- Recognition as the chapter with the highest “Overall Excellence” by the ACR.
As your president, I look forward to continuing to work with Atul, our executive committee, our board, our committees, and all our members to keep us moving forward in a time when advocacy is so important for our profession, our practices, and each one of us individually."

Over the past year, our society was awarded a grant from the ACR to create short videos aimed and educating the public on the importance of our profession and the value that we provide to patient care and patient safety.
|
|
At our October meeting the results of this effort were unveiled and can be found in the coverage below:
|
|
Our physics committee has also led the effort to create videos illustrating the benefit of ACR/NYSRS membership for medical physicists. These videos were tailor-made following feedback the Physics Committee received from a survey of their physicist colleagues.
Be among the first to see below:
|
|
All members are encouraged to use these videos to educate our peers, our patients, and our communities. Examples of how these videos can be used include:
- Providing to your patients with other practice materials
- Embedding links to the videos in e-mail signatures
- Sharing directly or through social media
- Providing the physicist videos to your own physicist colleagues in your practice
Based on the initial success of this effort we look forward to expanding our library over the upcoming year.

Scope of Practice/Governmental Relations
|
|
Scope of practice (SOP) issues, a variant of turf battles that Radiology has fought for years, has moved to the forefront nationally and in New York, whereby through legislation other providers seek to include aspects of radiology under their specialties’ licensure. In recent years, the scope of practice issues that our society has successfully lobbied against include physicians assistants being able to perform fluoroscopic guided examinations and procedures without supervision, nurse practitioners being able to practice without physician supervision including providing imaging services, as well as expansion of the anatomy of which podiatrists may provide care. By advocating for providers who practice imaging and imaging-guided procedures to have adequate training and expertise, our society continues to serve the best interests of all our members.
In NYS this activity is coordinated through our active Governmental Relations (GR) Committee, comprised of members residing in Albany and statewide with a broad spectrum of sub-specialty expertise who work together with our lobbyist (Shauneen McNally of the firm Reid, McNally & Savage, LLC) and our legal counsel Peter Millock, Esq (Nixon Peabody LLC), both of whom have a professional focus on health care matters. In addition to SOP issues, we regularly take positions on bills relating to out of network billing, tort reform, and prior authorization reform, work on regulatory issues mandating insurance coverage for CT colonography and tomosynthesis, and collaborate with city and state officials to update radiation safety regulations and radiologic technologist licensure.
In support of our legislative efforts, we have a longstanding Political Action Committee (PAC). The purpose of the PAC is to promote and advance the practice of radiology and the delivery of high-quality patient care. This non-partisan PAC collects donations from individuals and practices and uses them to provide support to targeted members of our state government. This support can lead to a significant difference in having our opinions heard when legislation pertaining to our profession is being considered. Annually, all members of our Board of Directors contribute, as do members from around the state. Several practices contribute to their entire group.
Every dollar can make a potential impact so please consider donating via this secure link below!

The NYSRS Diversity and Inclusion Committee continues to grow and has 35 members, the most of any of the Chapter’s committees. Our activities include promoting diversity and inclusion locally, regionally, and nationally. NYSRS was well-represented at the ACR Chapter Leaders Diversity Colloquium on 3/4/21 with a presentation by Dr. Judy Yee on all of the activities of our chapter’s D&I Committee as a model for other states. We held our inaugural Diversity Forum virtually on June 29, 2021, featuring Guest Speaker Dr. Geraldine McGinty who spoke about “Why it’s important to embrace diversity”. As a part of this session, two interactive workshops were held on Reducing Bias and Navigating Difficult Conversations in the Reading Room with wonderful engagement by attendees. Tools were made available to help members fight bias and scenarios were presented with robust discussions of how to handle difficult conversations regarding discrimination.
The Chapter has formally adopted multiple important diversity and inclusion goals. A resolution against anti-Asian violence and discrimination was also adopted by the Chapter. With the NYSRS Foundation, we have promoted leadership training and sponsored a Chapter member (Dr. Vikash Panghaal) to attend the ACR RLI Leadership Maximize Your Influence and Impact Course.
Our efforts continue. With the NYSRS ethics committee, we will be hosting an educational webinar on Transgender Imaging where we hope to bring in different perspectives on this important topic. We encourage all members to join us for this virtual session which will take place on December 15, 2021, from 12 pm-1 pm. We are planning an event focused on building the pipeline for diversity in Radiology. This will be modeled after a similar event held by our colleagues in Chicago. Medical students will be invited to attend a virtual event with different opportunities to learn about radiology and its subspecialties. We plan to use various engaging formats including panel discussions, lectures, and exhibits with opportunities for mentorship and sponsorship.

Formed in 2020, the New York State Radiological Society Foundation is a non-profit charitable entity whose purpose is to foster the development of future leaders for the benefit of our Society, our profession, and, most importantly, our patients.
To achieve this goal, the Foundation funds educational programs, leadership training, and other initiatives for Society members focusing on students, residents, and young professionals. Through close coordination with the Society’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the Foundation strives to promote inclusion and diversity in leadership and to support increased health equity. This includes training the next generation of leaders in clinical practice, advocacy/health policy, and quality/patient safety. The Foundation is funded through the generosity of radiology departments, radiology practices, individual radiologists, other foundations, and our industry partners.
Less than 2 years old, our foundation has already funded educational activities for over 30 residents, fellows, and young professionals including at the ACR’s Quality & Patient Safety Conference and multiple Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI) programs.
Anyone interested in supporting this important effort may donate online on our webpage.
