FALL/WINTER 2022 Update

A message from our new President:

As 2022 draws to a close, the NYSRS looks back on several key accomplishments ,and looks forward to serving our members in both traditional and new ways. Following the practice instituted by past president Keith Hentel, MD., we are happy to share this concise newsletter with you.

As we continue to cautiously emerge from COVID restrictions, we are excited to return to in-person meetings in 2023. We also plan to retain the benefits of broader engagement of our members afforded by continuing to offer remote participation options. Our next Newsletter will have more on this subject. If you have any ideas you would like to share in this regard, please send them to me at [email protected].

On behalf of all members of NYSRS and the Board of Directors, I want to once again express our sincere gratitude to Keith Hentel for his dedication and creative leadership over the past year. Unhampered by the challenges of mostly remote meetings, Keith led our society in ways that maintained our past successful ways and brought us into new activities that were both valuable and fun. Please know that I am deeply humbled to be serving the Society as president this year, and will do everything I can to listen to the wisdom among us and guide us though a productive, successful and satisfying year ahead. Happy Holidays to each of you.

Providing Value for Our Members
ADVOCACY

The NYSRS promotes legislation, regulations and policies favorable to radiologists, our practices, and most importantly our patients. The Society has been instrumental in preventing many proposed changes that would have negatively affected us all including proposed scope of practice and reimbursement issues.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The NYSRS supports the professional development of radiologists through programs, scholarship and networking opportunities. The NYSRS Foundation provides funding for innovative programs and for our members to participate in established professional development courses including those offered by the ACR's Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI).

CONTINUING EDUCATION

The NYSRS promotes the continuing education of radiologists through participation at our member meetings, sponsorship of special educational presentations through our affiliation with the New York Roentgen Ray Society.

REPRESENTATION IN THE ACR

The NYSRS is the Second largest state chapter in the country and serves to represent our professionals, practices and patients at the Annual Meeting and in many leadership positions throughout the college.
Opportunities to Get Involved
The NYSRS is a great way to make connections, learn about, and gain experience in organized radiology/leadership while working to better our profession. Serving on one of our committees/sections (listed below) is a great way to work towards a fellowship in the ACR (FACR).

NYSRS Joins the Radiology Health Equity Coalition
The New York State Radiological Society is one of the first chapters to join the new multi-society Radiology Health Equity Coalition.
This network of patient-focused radiology societies will work together to collect, assess, and disseminate resources and best practices, advocate for and connect with patients and community members, and collaborate on programs and services to improve access and utilization of preventative and diagnostic imaging.

More information can be found on their website at : https://www.radhealthequity.org/
The NYSRS Video Library has Expanded
The NYSRS has added two new videos to our library focused on the role that radiologists and radiation oncologists play in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Like our previous videos, these efforts (which have already been view almost 20,000 times) will help to raise public awareness of the importance of our professions.

Please share with your patients, peers, and communities.
Our full video library can be accessed on the NYSRS YouTube page at: NYSRS YouTube Page

We've Been Hacked !!!
The New York State Radiological Society held our first Radiology Hackathon with over 50 participants from across New York State and other ACR chapters including attendings, residents and students. Our teams took on some of the challenges facing our profession including member engagement, sustainability/environmental impact of imaging practices, and the visibility of our profession.

With our T-shirts and GrubHub dinners, participants both generated great ideas and had fun while doing so.

Congratulations to our winning team who proposed a novel use of AI to reduce the environmental impact of data storage of DICOM images.
NYSRS FOUNDATION Turns 4 !!!
The NYSRS Foundation has continued to grow and expand its activities over the past year. Founded in 2018, the Foundation's mission is to fund education and training programs and initiatives in support of resident and early career radiologist development and leadership training, and in support of diversity and inclusion activities to achieve health equity.

Most recently, the Foundation has provided funding for three residents and one young professional member to attend the ACR's Radiology Leadership Institutes course at Babson College. The Foundation has also awarded seven scholarships to allow residents to attend the RLI's Kickstart Your Career program. The Foundation also supported activities like the NYSRS Hackathon.

The Foundation and its activities are funded through the generosity of the society and through charitable contributions of our members, We also thank our thank the following corporate sponsors for their support:
Donating to the Foundation can be made in honor of individual(s) and is is a great way to recognize the successes of colleagues or to provide thanks to someone in our field.
