The September 24 Symposium is dedicated to the memory of NYSSO Past President John A. Kennedy Jr., who passed away on April 17.
Known widely in Watertown and surrounding communities of the north country, Mr. Kennedy was a prominent figure in his profession. He served two stints as president of NYSSO, from 1984 to 1987 and again from 2005 to 2007, in a career that spanned more than 50 years.
He was a two-time recipient of NYSSO's Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1998 and 2006, and in 2004 he received the Richard A. Terry Award, given to a member who has made an important impact on the Society and in forwarding its mission of advancing and protecting the profession.
He also advised licensing authorities on exams and other requirements for certification in ophthalmic dispensing. His independently owned and operated business, J Opticians, had stores in both Watertown and Ogdensburg.
NYSSO has created a Memorial Scholarship Fund in Mr. Kennedy's name to honor his contributions to the Society and the profession.
Proceeds of the fund will be shared equally between the two Opticianry Programs in New York state, NYC City Tech and Erie Community College.
Please support this endeavor by making a donation to the scholarship fund and sharing a memorial message with Mr. Kennedy's family. All comments will be shared on our website after the Symposium.
