NOT YOUR GRANDMA'S SUMMER SCHOOL
For about 25 students each year "summer vacation" means "education" via an intensive 9 to 5, four-week course in fundraising management at the Heyman Center's Summer Intensive Certificate program. With sessions ranging from "annual appeals" to "donor research," "capital campaigns," "social media," "technology," "planned giving," "ethics of fundraising," "major gifts" and many other critical aspects of development, the Summer Intensive offers a unique opportunity for beginning fundraisers and those interested in a fundraising career to develop a comprehensive view of professional fundraising.
What is particularly notable about the Summer Intensive program has been the number of foreign students who have attended over the past 11 years. Altogether 40 students from 24 countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America have joined their American counterparts to learn the "American model" of fundraising. This mix of cultures provides an added benefit as students journey through the month together and develop relationships that often last throughout their professional careers.
Each year the students are asked to complete a detailed evaluation of every aspect of the Summer Intensive Certificate Program. "This month was certainly intense, but the content of the program has given me so much knowledge to take back my organization," said one recent student. Sessions taught by a faculty of working professionals are often praised: "The faculty is great - they actually work in their fields and bring real life experiences to the classroom" said another. Many students laud the program as it contributes to their professional progress: "I'd recommend this program for anyone entering the fundraising field are wanting to grow in their chosen profession."
For the Summer Intensive Program students, "summer vacation" is a major step toward their personal professional goals; at the same time their education at the Heyman Center will enhance the growth of nonprofits worldwide.

FACULTY PROFILE
|
Poonam Prasad, Adjunct Assistant Professor
According to Seneca, the Roman philosopher, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." "In the field of development, the preparation required is most often research," says Poonam Prasad, Founder and President of Prasad Consulting & Research, a New York City-based fundraising consulting firm that has helped raise billions of dollars for more than 100 local, national, and international nonprofits for over 25 years. Poonam is particularly well-known for her unparalleled knowledge of the NY philanthropic landscape and her ability to identify connections between the city's wealthiest and most prominent philanthropists.
Poonam has taught prospect research at NYU's Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising for more than 10 years and these days frequently runs into her former students at seminars and conferences as they now hold senior positions at nonprofits all across the country. In her graduate level and certificate program seminars, students receive a crash-course in the basics of prospect research, from how to navigate the industry's top wealth research databases to tips on creating cultivation and solicitation plans for hypothetical clients. Throughout her courses Poonam stresses the critical role that donor research plays in the success of any non-profit organization by highlighting research's ability to help fundraisers identify potential donors, hone-in on their philanthropic interests, and make the winning ask.
Outside of the Heyman Center, students and development professionals have the opportunity to learn from Poonam's expertise at her numerous speaking engagements, such as the "Beyond Google" Breakfast Workshop organized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Westchester Chapter in March 2015, her upcoming presentation on the role of research in planning special events at AFP's Fundraising Day in New York conference on June 12th, at the Marriott Marquis, or at the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) International Conference in New Orleans on July 24th. Poonam currently serves on the the Board of the Giving Institute and the NYC Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is a former President of Women in Development New York.
