Event Highlight(s) of the Week!
Book Talk: In the Jaws of the Crocodile with Emil Draitser
Tuesday, May 4th, 10:00 - 11:00 AM

Emil Draitser spent a decade contributing to Crocodile, the major Party-sponsored satire magazine known for its sharp-tongued essays and pointed cartoons. After he got in trouble for criticizing an important Soviet official, he began weighing the heavy decision of whether to emigrate. In this book talk about his memoir In the Jaws of the Crocodile, Draitser will explore what it means to be a satirist in a country lacking freedom of expression. He will provide a window into the lives of a generation of artists who were allowed to poke fun, as long as they toed a narrow, state-approved line.
IR Community Updates
Our featured alumni this week is Tim Robustelli!

Tim graduated from the MAIR program in 2017 and went on to work at New America in the Future of Land and Housing Program. This program looks at property rights challenges both internationally and domestically and finds solutions at the intersection of technology and policymaking. Tim has released research in the program, but has also been able to write for publications like the Washington Post, Politico, and CNN. Overall, he has enjoyed his time in policy research and is hoping to build on that in the future by possibly pursuing research in the academic sphere.

Tim says that he uses the writing, critical thinking, and time management skills he learned in the MAIR program every day at work. His advice to MAIR students is to stay curious and not to be afraid to take opportunities that might seem tangential to your interests. You just might end up finding something you’re passionate about!
