Queer Shabbat

Queer Shabbat is a monthly ritual space for reflection, connection, and grounding in the sacred cycles of Jewish time. We're excited to share that after four years of Amelia holding this space muchly on her own, and a delicious summer of working as more of a team, we're moving to a stewardship team model! In order to make this transition gracefully and in a manner that will hopefully hold us for another four years, we're taking this month and next to focus inward, set up some systems for collaborative ritual making (you might have noticed our new email address!) and vision forward the collective dreams of Nahalat Shalom's Queer Shabbat. This means that we're pausing Queer Shabbat for November and December, and we'll be back together in January 2023 in new formation! If your heart desires this home-space to continue and you don't want to imagine life without Queer Shabbat, then please consider joining our stewardship team! Email us at: [email protected] with interest and any questions.

JORGE ISAACS FERRER

Jorge Isaacs Ferrer (Cali, Colombia, 1837-Ibagué, Colombia, 1895) is Spanish America’s most

well known romantic writer. His father, George Henry Isaacs, was born in Jamaica to a family of

English Jews. At a very young age he moved to Colombia, first to Chocó, and then to Cali,

where he married Manuela Ferrer. According to Donald McGrady, George Henry Isaacs

converted to Catholicism in order to marry her, and lived the rest of his life as a true Christian

(14).

Jorge Isaacs’s fame rests on the novel María, published in 1867. It became an immediate

success, with many editions in Spanish; it was later translated into many languages. It still is the

most read novel by a Spanish American writer. After his success as a novelist, Isaacs started a

career as a journalist and a politician.

It is perhaps the success of María that has obscured Isaac’s poetry. Before publishing his novel,

Jorge Isaacs was well known as a poet in Bogotá. He published a collection of his poems,

Poesías, in 1864. During the last years of his life he worked on a long poem, Saulo, but he

managed to finish only the first Canto or section. His poems were collected and published in

Barcelona, in 1920, by the Maucci Publishing House.

Renewal Shabbat with Rabbi Chavah Carp

ZOOM ONLY

Our Renewal Shabbat is open to all. We embrace prayer with an open heart. At our services we imbed the Torah's themes and bring them forward into our daily life. Each Shabbat we are guided through a visualization that is intended to aid in our spiritual practice and to get better acquainted with the text of our Torah. Prayers for Healing are always included as well as the Mourners Kaddish to remember those who came before us.

At each service we invite one member to share their story as a way of getting to know one another and to practice inclusivity. If you are interested in participating and are ready to set a Shabbat to share please contact me at [email protected]. Our stories are very important, and we need to hear yours.

Hi, all. We are receiving asylum seekers from the border in ABQ once again, now that some border policies have expired, and we're helping families on their way to their sponsors by assisting them at the ABQ Sunport. If you speak Spanish, French, or Portuguese (and perhaps soon we'll need Ukrainian and Russian) and you want to help out a couple of hours per week or per month at the airport, please let me know. Otherwise, you can also provide support with donations of items on the attached list or monetarily by donating to St. Therese Catholic Church at 300 Mildred, NW, ABQ, 87107. Please write "asylum-seekers" on the memo line. Homeless APS students

WANT to HELP HOMELESS APS STUDENTS??

We need non-perishable easy open foods, pop tops, tuna and chicken salad snack boxes, small cups of fruit, ramen noodles, peanut butter, juices, breakfast and energy bars and sports drinks! Roger picked up a good load of foods and hygiene supplies Friday 111822 and told us they were very grateful. Donations have been down and they need foods and hygiene supplies equally. One of our donors asked a group of friends to help with hygiene kits and supplies! This is a great way to give people an opportunity to help. There seem to be more kids than last year and they are on the street, living in cars, bunking with friends’ families. Some are unaccompanied by any family member. Let’s do what we can to help these kids stay in school. When we work together we can make a difference. Thank you!

St Martins HopeWorks Re-homing project and day shelter

The Program Manager for Hope Village has reported that the residents would appreciate some art supplies! The Program Manager and the new Community Engagement staff member, Matt, picked up a good load of goods on August 26, 2022. The re-homing project still needs small lamps, brooms, mops, cups and bowls, bedding, sheets, blankets, towels and other household goods, please also include some art supplies. There is also a special request for bar soaps. No children’s items, please. Many thanks to all the donors to these projects. These donations help our community.

Please contact [email protected] or Kathryn at [email protected] / 505 256 7669 to arrange drop off and with questions.
