Voices of Nahalat Shalom

This Shabbat is being marked nationally as Repro Shabbat, marking 50 years since the passage of Roe v Wade. Many congregations are marking it with sermons, discussions and action plans to support access to abortion and to call attention to the fact that the current movements to deny pregnant people access to abortion care are based on conservative Christian understandings of when life begins, which are fundamentally different from Jewish understanding. Jewish law values and protect the life of the pregnant person.

A Prayer for the 50th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Rabbi Emily Langowitz

Source of Life, Deep Well of Being:

Be with us now as we mark this day; the dread it brings

And its sacred power to compel us.

Help us to hold our sorrow and our resolve in equal measure.

The arc of the moral universe is long, we know,

And sometimes it bends

backwards.

So we must turn it, and turn it, and turn it again Striving ever onward toward a world built on justice And free from shame.

Comfort us, Compassionate One, in our sorrow for what has been lost. Strengthen us, Rock and Redeemer, in our work to find it once more. And give us hope that our nation and its laws might once again reflect that each of us are Creators in the divine image of our Creator:

Able to speak our truths into being Able to shape our worlds as we choose Free to name, to imagine, to discern What is good

What is good

What is very good.

JORGE ISAACS FERRER

Jorge Isaacs Ferrer (Cali, Colombia, 1837-Ibagué, Colombia, 1895) is Spanish America’s most

well known romantic writer. His father, George Henry Isaacs, was born in Jamaica to a family of

English Jews. At a very young age he moved to Colombia, first to Chocó, and then to Cali,

where he married Manuela Ferrer. According to Donald McGrady, George Henry Isaacs

converted to Catholicism in order to marry her, and lived the rest of his life as a true Christian

(14).

Jorge Isaacs’s fame rests on the novel María, published in 1867. It became an immediate

success, with many editions in Spanish; it was later translated into many languages. It still is the

most read novel by a Spanish American writer. After his success as a novelist, Isaacs started a

career as a journalist and a politician.

It is perhaps the success of María that has obscured Isaac’s poetry. Before publishing his novel,

Jorge Isaacs was well known as a poet in Bogotá. He published a collection of his poems,

Poesías, in 1864. During the last years of his life he worked on a long poem, Saulo, but he

managed to finish only the first Canto or section. His poems were collected and published in

Barcelona, in 1920, by the Maucci Publishing House.

ZOOM ONLY

Our Renewal Shabbat is open to all. We embrace prayer with an open heart. At our services we imbed the Torah's themes and bring them forward into our daily life. Prayers for Healing are always included as well as the Mourners Kaddish to remember those who came before us.

At each service we invite one member to share their story as a way of getting to know one another and to practice inclusivity. If you are interested in participating and are ready to set a Shabbat to share please contact me at [email protected]. Our stories are very important, and we need to hear yours.

Community Action / Tikkun Olam
Human Rights Advocacy Training Project Fundraiser
From Lori Rudolph: There is a new advocacy project for Palestinian youth who live in three different communities in the West Bank. This is a collaborative project with the Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association in the UK and the UK/Palestine Social Work and Human Rights Society. This is the first step towards realizing our vision of creating a mental health/advocacy center in Hebron. Riad Arar, former director of Defense for Children International-Palestine’s Protection and Social Mobilization Program is the founder of the UK/Palestine Social Work and Human Rights Society. More info here.
Support Asylum Seekers
Hi, all. We are receiving asylum seekers from the border in ABQ once again, now that some border policies have expired, and we're helping families on their way to their sponsors by assisting them at the ABQ Sunport. If you speak Spanish, French, or Portuguese (and perhaps soon we'll need Ukrainian and Russian) and you want to help out a couple of hours per week or per month at the airport, please let me know. Otherwise, you can also provide support with donations of items on the attached list or monetarily by donating to St. Therese Catholic Church at 300 Mildred, NW, ABQ, 87107. Please write "asylum-seekers" on the memo line. Feel free to contact Cris Elder [email protected] with questions.

Homeless APS students

WANT to HELP HOMELESS APS STUDENTS??

We need non-perishable easy open foods, pop tops, tuna and chicken salad snack boxes, small cups of fruit, ramen noodles, peanut butter, juices, breakfast and energy bars and sports drinks! Roger and James picked up a good load of foods and hygiene supplies on Friday 01/13/23. There seem to be more kids than last year and they are on the street, living in cars, or bunking with friends’ families. Some are unaccompanied by any family member. Roger and James said they count on our steady donations. Let’s do what we can to help these kids stay in school. When we work together we can make a difference. Thank you!

St Martins HopeWorks Re-homing project and day shelter

Matt picked up a truck load of clothes, shoes, household goods and supplies on Wednesday 01/11/23! The re-homing project and Hope Village need small lamps, brooms, mops, cups and bowls, bedding, sheets, blankets, towels and other household goods. There is also a special request for bar soaps as well as any travel size personal hygiene supplies. No children’s items, please. This was a huge donation and was greatly appreciated. These donations help the diverse homeless in our community. Thank you!

Please contact [email protected] or Kathryn at [email protected] / 505 256 7669 to arrange drop off and with questions.

JEWISH JUSTICE CIRCLE: AWAKENING TO WHITENESS

Jewish Justice Circle: Awakening to whiteness is a 16 week intimate and spiritual deep dive into racial and economic justice, settler colonialism, and the impact of white supremacy and christian dominance in the U.S. through a Jewish lens. Co-led by three white Jewish antiracist leaders, Amelia Mae Paradise, Franny Silverman, and Andrea Jacobs.

Applications Due Feb 21

Using the Jewish values of “Tikkun Olam, Repairing The World,” and deep reflective inquiry, this project aspires to build a bridge to transformational anti-racist engagement. The Jewish Bridge Project offers this Jewish Justice Circle: Awakening to whiteness (JJC:A2w) as a guided process for white Jewish people in exploring whiteness, white supremacy, racism, antiBlackness, antiJewish oppression, ancestral trauma, settler colonialism, christian dominance and capitalism in the U.S. today. The course facilitates a practice of undoing racism at personal, institutional, and structural levels. The curriculum focuses on teaching historical context, honoring personal (ancestral, somatic, emotional, spiritual) experience, defining common terms within the Jewish justice ethic, and exploring the interplay of antisemitism, racism, capitalism, and white supremacy both within our Jewish institutions and in the U.S. at large. The Jewish Bridge Project embraces the wisdom that living in a less brutal and racist culture benefits all members of society.
