February 10-12, 2023 (Friday-Sunday) GET READY FOR KlezmerQuerque 2023 - Nahalat Shalom's 21st Annual Festival of Klezmer Music & Dance! KlezmerQuerque is an internationally recognized festival featuring Jewish dance, Yiddish and Jewish song and 'klezmer' instrumental music rooted in the traditional wedding ceremonies of the Eastern European Jewish people. Join our community for three joyous days of music, dance, concerts, storytelling, Shabbat services, and hands-on workshops. Our special guest artists this year are musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Mark Rubin, a.k.a. "Jew of Oklahoma [ https://www.jewofoklahoma.com/ ], and Bruce Bierman - award-winning Jewish dance master, dramaturg, playwrite, film and theater director.
Mark Rubin is touted by the National Museum of American Jewish History as "One of the great American Jewish musicians of our time." His credits in the Jewish music world include long time collaborations with Frank London’s Klezmer Brass All-Stars, The Other Europeans, and Andy Statman, as well as two decades on faculty at KlezKamp in NYC. He has been featured performer and instructor with multiple appearances at Yiddish Summer Weimar, KlezFest London, KlezMore Vienna, Klezmer Festival Furth, Festival of Jewish Culture Krakow among others. Mark will be featuring music from his new highly acclaimed album "The Triumph of Assimilation" on Friday and Saturday evenings and he will teach two 90-minute hands-on workshop sessions on Sunday.
Bruce Bierman serves as co-artistic director of the Yiddish Theatre Ensemble of Berkeley and was recently the dramaturg in collaboration with the San Francisco Playhouse's production of "Indecent' which is an adaptation of Sholem Asch's 'God of Vengeance' (1907). Bruce is a leading presenter of Jewish Dance throughout the Western U.S. and has learned from a handful of great teachers and scholars of Yiddish, traditional Yemenite and Israeli folkdance. We celebrate Bruce's eighth year with us at KlezmerQuerque. He will lead dances on Friday and Saturday evening and he will teach two 90-minute workshop sessions on Sunday.

From 6:30-7:45PM Cantor Beth Cohen, The Nahalat Shalom Community Klezmer Band, Rikud dancers & special guest Jewish dance master Bruce Bierman will lead our klezmerer Shabes Service which includes our favorite prayers from Kabbalat Shabbat, Ma’ariv, the lighting and blessing of the candles, Kaddish Yatom, Mishebeirach (prayer for healing), Kiddush and Hamotzee. Maggidah Batya Podos will also treat us to an inspiring story!

Special guests include Pastor Paul Schick of the Community of Joy Lutheran Church, Chad Pfeiffer of the Navaho Nation and Aamna Nayyar from the Muslim community. They will be sharing their faith tradition’s relationship with trees and the natural world

Human Rights Advocacy Training Project Fundraiser
From Lori Rudolph: There is a new advocacy project for Palestinian youth who live in three different communities in the West Bank. This is a collaborative project with the Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association in the UK and the UK/Palestine Social Work and Human Rights Society. This is the first step towards realizing our vision of creating a mental health/advocacy center in Hebron. Riad Arar, former director of Defense for Children International-Palestine’s Protection and Social Mobilization Program is the founder of the UK/Palestine Social Work and Human Rights Society. Homeless APS students
WANT to HELP HOMELESS APS STUDENTS??
We need non-perishable easy open foods, pop tops, tuna and chicken salad snack boxes, small cups of fruit, ramen noodles, peanut butter, juices, breakfast and energy bars and sports drinks! Roger and James picked up a good load of foods and hygiene supplies on Friday 01/13/23. There seem to be more kids than last year and they are on the street, living in cars, or bunking with friends’ families. Some are unaccompanied by any family member. Roger and James said they count on our steady donations. Let’s do what we can to help these kids stay in school. When we work together we can make a difference. Thank you!

St Martins HopeWorks Re-homing project and day shelter
Matt picked up a truck load of clothes, shoes, household goods and supplies on Wednesday 01/11/23! The re-homing project and Hope Village need small lamps, brooms, mops, cups and bowls, bedding, sheets, blankets, towels and other household goods. There is also a special request for bar soaps as well as any travel size personal hygiene supplies. No children’s items, please. This was a huge donation and was greatly appreciated. These donations help the diverse homeless in our community. Thank you!

Singer/Songwriter David LaMotte will be performing a benefit concert on February 18th at 7:00 pm at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
Singer/Songwriter David LaMotte has performed in all 50 states and on 5 continents. His music has been described as "Genre fluid," with songs that lean toward Americana, Acoustic Pop, Southern Rock, and World Music. In addition to his music, David is passionate about peace work and his TED talk on "What Music Can Teach Us about Peacemaking" can be found on Ted.com. This concert is a rare opportunity to see him perform live in New Mexico.
A typical LaMotte concert involves a healthy dose of storytelling and you can expect this at this show as well. This concert benefits ABQ FaithWorks (abqfaithworks.org) and Asylum Seeker Welcome.

Join us for a one hour experiential information session to learn more about Jewish Bridge Project’s Jewish Justice Circle: Awakening to whiteness.
