Voices of Nahalat Shalom

Hello everyone! The enews will be changing format on March 21st, 2023, the 1st day of Nisan in the Hebrew year 5783. The enews will switch to having a longer monthly edition around Rosh Chodesh, the Hebrew head of the month, and shorter "eblasts" the other three weeks of the month. We are also considering reinstating a print edition, budget willing, if the community is interested. The enews will be sent out on Tuesdays and all submissions will need to be in by the Friday before. If you are excited to join the editorial team for the enews, have access to low cost or free physical printing, or have a vision for what our newsletters could look like, please contact [email protected].

Safety Committee News

We have wonderful news to share. Through a grant from Project Heart Start, Nahalat Shalom is receiving an AED device (automated external defibrillator) at no cost! AED’s save lives. You can use this portable device to quickly shock someone’s heart if they collapse, have no pulse, and stop breathing. This condition is known as sudden cardiac arrest. “We estimate that about 1,700 lives are saved in the U.S. per year by bystanders using an AED” says Dr. Myron Weisfeldt of Johns Hopkins University.

Before receiving our AED, we need to have a team of community members attend a 90 minute training and practice in using the AED and in hands only CPR. Please consider stepping up and joining me to make our NS community and our city a safer place.

The training is scheduled on Thursday, April 13th at 10:00 AM, at New Heart, 601 Lomas Blvd. NE (near Embassy Suites Hotel). To attend, RSVP to [email protected] . If you have any questions, email or call me at 781-572-8882.

Yours,

Howie Sagrans

Journey to the Heart of Shabbat

Have you wondered why we call organized prayer, “services”?

We gather together in sacred space to “serve,” to do sacred work with and for each other.

The Shabbat morning “service” is not a random collection of prayers. It is a journey taking us both out of ourselves and into ourselves. Through prayer, chant, song, movement, and meditation, we will travel the path of the Jewish mystics to the sacred heart of Shabbat.

We will not have a formal Torah reading, but we will have a Torah discussion. The parsha for this week is Pikudeh, the last parsha in the book of Shemot (“Names”), which we usually call, “Exodus.” At the end of the parsha, the holy tabernacle which the people built in the wilderness is finally completed. However, we are told, the people cannot enter the tabernacle, because the Holy Spirit fills it. In our discussion, we will ask ourselves and each other, “Why am I, and why are we, not permitted to enter into the Holy? What secrets do I keep from myself and others? Is it the content of my secrets that keeps me separate from the One and the All, or is it the secrecy itself? How do I reconcile myself with my failings? Can I be both human and Holy, even if just for an instant?”

Zoom link will be in next week's enews.

Renewal Shabbat with Rabbi Chavah Carp

ZOOM ONLY

Our Renewal Shabbat is open to all. We embrace prayer with an open heart. At our services we imbed the Torah's themes and bring them forward into our daily life. Each Shabbat we are guided through a visualization that is intended to aid in our spiritual practice and to get better acquainted with the text of our Torah. Prayers for Healing are always included as well as the Mourners Kaddish to remember those who came before us.

At each service we invite one member to share their story as a way of getting to know one another and to practice inclusivity. If you are interested in participating and are ready to set a Shabbat to share please contact me at [email protected]. Our stories are very important, and we need to hear yours.

Human Rights Advocacy Training Project Fundraiser
From Lori Rudolph: There is a new advocacy project for Palestinian youth who live in three different communities in the West Bank. This is a collaborative project with the Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association in the UK and the UK/Palestine Social Work and Human Rights Society. This is the first step towards realizing our vision of creating a mental health/advocacy center in Hebron. Riad Arar, former director of Defense for Children International-Palestine’s Protection and Social Mobilization Program is the founder of the UK/Palestine Social Work and Human Rights Society. More info here.
Support Asylum Seekers
Hi, all. We are receiving asylum seekers from the border in ABQ once again, now that some border policies have expired, and we're helping families on their way to their sponsors by assisting them at the ABQ Sunport. If you speak Spanish, French, or Portuguese (and perhaps soon we'll need Ukrainian and Russian) and you want to help out a couple of hours per week or per month at the airport, please let me know. Otherwise, you can also provide support with donations of items on the attached list or monetarily by donating to St. Therese Catholic Church at 300 Mildred, NW, ABQ, 87107. Please write "asylum-seekers" on the memo line. Feel free to contact Cris Elder [email protected] with questions.

Homeless APS students

WANT to HELP HOMELESS APS STUDENTS??

We need non-perishable easy open foods, pop tops, tuna and chicken salad snack boxes, small cups of fruit, ramen noodles, peanut butter, juices, breakfast and energy bars and sports drinks! Roger and James picked up a good load of foods and hygiene supplies on Friday 01/13/23. There seem to be more kids than last year and they are on the street, living in cars, or bunking with friends’ families. Some are unaccompanied by any family member. Roger and James said they count on our steady donations. Let’s do what we can to help these kids stay in school. When we work together we can make a difference. Thank you!

St Martins HopeWorks Re-homing project and day shelter

Matt picked up a truck load of clothes, shoes, household goods and supplies on Wednesday 01/11/23! The re-homing project and Hope Village need small lamps, brooms, mops, cups and bowls, bedding, sheets, blankets, towels and other household goods. There is also a special request for bar soaps as well as any travel size personal hygiene supplies. No children’s items, please. This was a huge donation and was greatly appreciated. These donations help the diverse homeless in our community. Thank you!

Please contact [email protected] or Kathryn at [email protected] / 505 256 7669 to arrange drop off and with questions.

In-Person Volunteer Orientation
We are excited to invite volunteers to our campus for an in-person orientation! To help prepare new and returning folks, we are offering orientations monthly. While mandatory for first-time participants, all are welcome! Sessions will include an overview of service options, waivers, and a brief tour. The first orientation will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 7th, with subsequent sessions occurring on the first Tuesday of every month.

If you or someone you know is ready to help out at our shelter or warehouse, please sign up by replying to this email or using the button below. Our Community Engagement Coordinator, Matt Aranez, is waiting to hear from you!

ABQFaithWorks

We have some very exciting training opportunities that are available coming up in a four part series over the next 5 weeks.

This training series centers around the importance of being Trauma Informed as we help those who are the most vulnerable among us (our immigrant and unhoused neighbors). Understanding how to best help someone (and how to take care of ourselves when helping traumatized individuals) ensures that we are able to best help people meet them where they need and understand that people may not act or behave like we may expect due to their experiences.

The presenter for this series is Julia Montany, who has has over ten years of experience working with populations who have experienced trauma in New Mexico, Georgia, Nigeria, and South Africa and is currently the Program Manager for Las Cumbres' WINGS Survivors of Torture program. The trainings will take place at our new office every Friday afternoon from 2:30pm - 3:30pm for the next 5 weeks with the exception  of Friday March 3rd due to a conflict with the NMILC (New Mexico Immigrant Law Center) and ABQ FaithWorks Asylum Application and Work Permit Application Clinics. Please note, if you cannot make it to one, they will be recorded and made available digitally following the date of the final part of the series so you can watch them at your convenience.

You must RSVP to attend any of the events. To register for any of the trainings in the series, please use this SignUp Genius link to reserve a spot  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094aadac2ba4fec16-lascubres#/

Please see below for all of the dates and times as well as the location and the attached flier to learn more about the sessions as well as attached photos for how to get to the location.
