Nahalat Shalom is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization

Voices of Nahalat Shalom

Community Coordinators!!!!

It is my extreme pleasure to introduce our new Community Coordinator team to the congregation.  Hershel Weiss (he/him), longtime member/leader, and Ilan Fichman (they/them), new and full of energy, are sharing the position, which we are all helping them co-design.  We have all kinds of excitement about the doors this position will open for us as a community and in the greater Albuquerque community.  Please reach out to them with your ideas about how you can volunteer to grow a pet project, or how you can plug into what they are doing to make our shul a vibrant, well-utilized space.

Here they are, in their own words:

Ilan Fichman (they/them/elle) was born and bred in Sonoma County California on unceded Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo land. They’ve spent time in the Bay Area of California, Southern Vermont, Western Massachusetts, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. They’ve found themselves lucky to be involved in complex, rich, and joyful Jewish community in all of those places. Ilan is grateful to be a part of Nahalat Shalom which they’re finding to be a spunky and vibrant congregation.

They find solace in writing, book arts, Jewish music particularly niggunim (wordless melodies), and exploring the bosque and mountains. They would love to get to know you: reach out to [email protected] if you’d like to go for a walk, have a conversation, study some text, or share some songs.

I’ve been part of Nahalat Shalom for so long, I feel like most of you already know me! For those of you who don’t, here is my introduction. For those of you who do know me, maybe there is something here that’s new.

Growing up in a working-class Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx with three Orthodox grandparents (my maternal grandfather died before I was born), my Jewish identity was a given.

My parents’ parents kept kosher and my parents were atheists, a somewhat confusing situation. One example of this: every Yom Kippur, I sat in shul with my dad, grandfather and uncle, grandma up in the balcony, everyone fasting. When it came time for the Rabbi to give his sermon my father would get up and leave, and I would follow. Once outside, we’d walk to St. Nicholas Avenue, where he’d buy us hotdogs or pizza.

Another point of Jewish tension in my early life was the two different cultures of my parents. My mother’s first language was Ladino and my father’s first language was Yiddish and I feel lucky to have both cultures inside of me. And this internal dynamic also has created some interesting challenges.

When Lynn Gottlieb came to New Mexico in the early eighties I encountered an expression of Judaism that resolved my Jewish contradictions. The lack of rigidity in her approach, the elements of fun and celebration, the necessity for confronting injustice, the rejection of what is oppressive in the liturgy—this was a brand of Judaism I could completely embrace.

I have been part of Nahalat Shalom ever since.

In 2002, in a conscious decision to become more involved, I moved into the residence on Luke Circle and lived there for four years.  Alberto López and I turned a long-abandoned space with broken windows into a woodshop and in that beautiful space I’ve been honored to build the synagogue entry doors, our aron kodesh, and most recently, along with Bobby Keogh, a new portico. The baseboard molding in the sanctuary was carved in the woodshop by various members of the community.

As a community, we turned a Baptist church into a synagogue and an asphalt parking lot surrounded by chain link fence into a biblical orchard. We worked hard together in the years following the purchase of the building, putting up the adobe wall, planting trees, landscaping, painting, patching, clearing out junk. I learned that doing work together builds a community.

Another part of my work at Nahalat Shalom has been to participate in the creation of an annual Sephardic festival, (our thirteenth year this May) and Casa Sefarad.

I am thrilled to take on this new intergenerational leadership position with Ilan Fichman. At their prompting, we talked about shared values, (we have many!) our strengths and weaknesses and about conflict resolution.

We discovered that one of our shared values is hospitality. Related to this value, the physical space is forefront in my mind, namely, creating more order and beauty, so that those who enter feel welcomed and embraced.

So far, in the few weeks I’ve been working, I’ve mainly been listening to leaders in our community. I am learning so much!  I want to listen to more people and divide the many tasks in the job description between Ilan and myself.

This is a moment of great potential, as we move out of three years of isolation when very few events have happened in our buildings, apart from the incredible work of Albuquerque Mutual Aid and the Moonbeams school. It is a good time to assess our needs, articulate our vision and move forward. Ilan and I are figuring out our individual roles in this new, shared position, with the support and love of our supervisors Clem and Emet and other smart and capable people. Although I wouldn’t have imagined myself in this role, it feels like the forty or so years that I’ve been part of this unique and precious community have led me here. I’m looking forward to building together!

Renewal Shabbat with Rabbi Chavah Carp

ZOOM ONLY

Our Renewal Shabbat is open to all. We embrace prayer with an open heart. At our services we imbed the Torah's themes and bring them forward into our daily life. Each Shabbat we are guided through a visualization that is intended to aid in our spiritual practice and to get better acquainted with the text of our Torah. Prayers for Healing are always included as well as the Mourners Kaddish to remember those who came before us.

At each service we invite one member to share their story as a way of getting to know one another and to practice inclusivity. If you are interested in participating and are ready to set a Shabbat to share please contact me at [email protected]. Our stories are very important, and we need to hear yours.

NAHALAT SHALOM COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING!

On Sunday, March 12, our religious school cheder community will join with our larger Nahalat Shalom community and ABQ Parks and Rec to plant trees—bringing back a beloved pre-Covid activity. We will meet promptly at 9:30 a.m. at the site and you are welcome to leave after you’ve planted or stay until noon. PLEASE RSVP to Batya Podos ([email protected]) and Beth ([email protected]). They need to know exact numbers. Here’s what you need to know:

You should bring your own work gloves although they'll have some if you don’t have any. Wear close-toed boots or shoes, long pants and sleeves, water and whatever snacks, hats, or other things you will need to function through the outdoor work session.

Directions to the Planting Area:

This year we are planting on the east side of the river just south of Paseo Del Norte. The access is through an area we call Shining River Bosque which is off Rio Grande Blvd. Coming from the North (*easiest route), take Alameda to Rio Grande and head south. In approximately one mile or so, Rio Grande Boulevard passes over Paseo del Norte and the Shining River Bosque Access Parking lot will be immediately on the right (West).

The other option is to take Paseo del Norte to 2nd-4th Street and exit. If coming from the east, you’ll take a left and get to the far-right lane. Turn right onto Pueblo RD NW to Rio Grande Blvd (a hazardous tight turn with oncoming traffic). Turn right onto Rio Grande. The Shining River Bosque Access will be on the left in approximately a quarter mile.

Once in the Shining River Bosque Access parking lot, proceed through the gate (paralleling Paseo del Norte) to the Paseo del Bosque Trail.  Cross the paved trail to gain access into the Bosque. Follow the dirt path (not the levy) south down into the Bosque to the planting site (about a third to half a mile).

Homeless APS students

WANT to HELP HOMELESS APS STUDENTS??

We need non-perishable easy open foods, pop tops, tuna and chicken salad snack boxes, small cups of fruit, ramen noodles, peanut butter, juices, breakfast and energy bars and sports drinks! Roger and James picked up a good load of foods and hygiene supplies on Friday 01/13/23. There seem to be more kids than last year and they are on the street, living in cars, or bunking with friends’ families. Some are unaccompanied by any family member. Roger and James said they count on our steady donations. Let’s do what we can to help these kids stay in school. When we work together we can make a difference. Thank you!

St Martins HopeWorks Re-homing project and day shelter

Matt picked up a truck load of clothes, shoes, household goods and supplies on Wednesday 01/11/23! The re-homing project and Hope Village need small lamps, brooms, mops, cups and bowls, bedding, sheets, blankets, towels and other household goods. There is also a special request for bar soaps as well as any travel size personal hygiene supplies. No children’s items, please. This was a huge donation and was greatly appreciated. These donations help the diverse homeless in our community. Thank you!

Please contact [email protected] or Kathryn at [email protected] / 505 256 7669 to arrange drop off and with questions.

ABQFaithWorks

We have some very exciting training opportunities that are available coming up in a four part series over the next 5 weeks.

This training series centers around the importance of being Trauma Informed as we help those who are the most vulnerable among us (our immigrant and unhoused neighbors). Understanding how to best help someone (and how to take care of ourselves when helping traumatized individuals) ensures that we are able to best help people meet them where they need and understand that people may not act or behave like we may expect due to their experiences.

The presenter for this series is Julia Montany, who has has over ten years of experience working with populations who have experienced trauma in New Mexico, Georgia, Nigeria, and South Africa and is currently the Program Manager for Las Cumbres' WINGS Survivors of Torture program. The trainings will take place at our new office every Friday afternoon from 2:30pm - 3:30pm for the next 5 weeks with the exception  of Friday March 3rd due to a conflict with the NMILC (New Mexico Immigrant Law Center) and ABQ FaithWorks Asylum Application and Work Permit Application Clinics. Please note, if you cannot make it to one, they will be recorded and made available digitally following the date of the final part of the series so you can watch them at your convenience.

You must RSVP to attend any of the events. To register for any of the trainings in the series, please use this SignUp Genius link to reserve a spot  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094aadac2ba4fec16-lascubres#/

Please see below for all of the dates and times as well as the location and the attached flier to learn more about the sessions as well as attached photos for how to get to the location.
