The world seems to be in turmoil. Between the fires and the Supreme Court, there are real reasons for anxiety. Concerns about Covid and the need for isolation over the past two years has left many of us feeling unmoored and unconnected. It's as if the combination of fear and trauma with which we've been coping is catching up to us in our daily lives. Coping is not the same as thriving.
We need to find new ways to breathe, to reconnect, to recognize how much we care....and find ways to let others we care about know how we are feeling. It's time to reach out to each other. A casual call, for no apparent reason, can lift someone's spirit, and remind them of community. An email that doesn't have 'business' attached to it can be surprisingly positive. A text that isn't an alarmist call for political action, but is, rather, a reminder of some shared past experience can help.
It's time to remember to take time and care for ourselves while caring for each other.

Counting the Omer 2022: Week Four Netzach: Endurance, Persistence
We can think of Netzach as the kind of energy that keeps us going when we think we’re “out of steam”. It’s a necessary part of trying to deal with the constant influx of challenges we face every day.
There are devastating fires all over New Mexico right now; the firefighters and their supporters depend on perseverance to continue to assess the weather and wind, the water and the terrain as they develop strategies designed to protect lives and property despite forces they cannot control. They need Netzach energy for the strength and courage necessary to do this work on behalf of us all.
We need the same kind of energy to focus on choosing our political actions and strategies in the face of rising right wing activism, religious nationalism, anti-semitism, homophobia and denial of body autonomy. It’s complicated. It’s exhausting. It’s necessary. And extra focus, persistence, endurance and determination are required.
It’s no accident that this is the week of Netzach.

SAFETY UPDATE
Rebuilding community is our top priority as we start to open back up after these long two years of Covid. Following up on Abby Shain’s “Safety is Communal” training in the Fall of 2021, Nahalat Shalom is pleased to announce the first in a series of trainings to help us intentionally reconnect with our community, as well as to provide the resources for communal safety.
On May 15th, directly following our community meeting, we have arranged for de-escalation training in the sanctuary with two trusted and experienced trainers. Please RSVP to Ahava Broock ([email protected]) to reserve your space. Training will be from 12:30pm to 2pm.
MEMBER SURVEY
Let’s Talk!
We have all been off in our Zoom spaces for a couple of years now and it is time to start coming back together as a community. Who we are and what we want as a community may have shifted while we have been apart. We put together a survey to get input from the Nahalat community. A team of volunteers will be reaching out to Nahalat members by telephone, email or test. The survey takes 20-30 minutes. It’s anonymous and, of course, voluntary. If we don’t get you in this first round we hope to hear from you later on. So, if you get a call, e-mail or text from a fellow Nahalat member, please respond. We want to hear from you.

Michael Chusid, who came to Albuquerque from Los Angeles in September 2016 to help members of Nahalat Shalom make their own shofarot, made his journey to olam haba'a, the world to come, on Monday evening. Michael was a ba'al tekiah, a master blaster, and his spirit will no doubt hear when those to whom he gifted a personally handmade shofar give a blast in his honor.

[folyas curiladas y verdis] ([red and green leaves])by Juan Gelman
Meeting ID: 898 1462 4964 Passcode: 662484
|
|
Juan Gelman
The Argentinean poet was born in Buenos Aires in 1930 to an immigrant Ashkenazi family from the Ukraine. The political situation in his country forced him into exile in 1975, which from the beginning had a powerful impact on his work. He lived in Rome, Madrid, Paris, and Mexico City, where he died in 2014. It was under the influence of the Converso poets, the Hebrew poets from Spain, and later of Clarisse Nicoïdski’s poetry that he wrote Dibaxu (1994), a book of poems in Ladino accompanied by their Spanish translations. This complex journey into Ladino language and literature was called “self-Sephardizing” by Monique R. Balbuena. According to Balbuena,
Gelman writes Dibaxu in… Balkan Ladino. He does not speak Ladino, he does not belong to the ethnic community that speaks Ladino, and the Ladino he uses is basically the one he reads in Nicoïdski and learns from her… For the culmination of his self-Sephardization, Nicoïdski’s poetry becomes his main intertext. (Monique R. Balbuena. Homeless Tongues: Poetry and Languages of the Sephardic Diaspora. Stanford: Stanford UP, 2016. 137-38)
