Wells Fargo, Cadwalader lead pilot project for name and gender-marker changes

Wells Fargo and the Charlotte office of Cadwalader have partnered with us to launch a new pro bono pilot project that will provide free name and gender-marker changes to LGBTQIA+ residents of Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg and Union counties.

Legal professionals from the company and firm will work with Legal Aid NC attorneys to provide the services.

"Having an attorney to help with a name and gender-marker change provides access to an often overwhelming or inaccessible process," said Allison Constance, our Director of Pro Bono Programs.

"When our clients can't afford a private attorney, they are stuck with the unwanted vestiges of an inauthentic identity," Constance continued.

"This project aims to fix that," she said, "allowing our clients to live their lives as their true selves and help them access housing, employment and health care."

Legal Aid of North Carolina is incredibly grateful for the partnership of Wells Fargo and Cadwalader on this project.

Heir Property Pro Bono Project campaigns for community awareness

Our Heir Property Pro Bono Project staff have been busy! Nicole Mueller, supervising attorney on the project, and Tranisha Hubbert, case coordinator for the project, have been traveling around the state educating community members about heir property, the legal issues that can arise from it, and how Legal Aid NC is partnering with pro bono volunteers to help. Since November, the pair have held clinics in Chowan, Columbus, Durham, Montgomery and Orange counties.

Volunteer Spotlight

William C. Moore · Cary, NC

Bill Moore was there at the beginning. In January 2003, the first month of the first full year of operation for Legal Aid NC, Bill Moore accepted his first pro bono case from us. It wouldn't be his last—not by a long shot.

Since then, Bill has handled literally hundreds of pro bono cases for us, ranking him among the most prolific pro bono volunteers in our history.

Many of his cases are connected to his longtime service as volunteer supervising attorney with the Elder Law Project, a joint effort of our Durham office and the Pro Bono Clinic at North Carolina Central University School of Law.

He handled many other cases as an in-house volunteer attorney for our Durham and Raleigh offices, and our Senior Law Project. His service has focused on providing wills and advanced directives to senior citizens, but he has also taken on cases involving unemployment benefits and eviction.

Through his service, Mr. Moore has embodied the true spirit of pro bono. He is one of the few volunteers whose contributions are so many that they are difficult to count in hours or even by number of clients.

He is a shining example of a lawyer who has long fulfilled the 50 hours per year of pro work as is supported by Rule 6.1 of the North Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct.
