Funding Opportunity: NIMble Applications to be accepted through March 31
Applications for our Needs Immediately Met (or NIMble) grant are being accepted through March 31. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to support one-time critical purchases, immediate needs for stabilization or crisis response, and/or innovative opportunities related to addressing the social determinants of health as a way to improve health and wellness outcomes throughout our region.
New Research Identifies Opportunities and Challenges in Appalachia's Tourism Economy
The Appalachian Regional Commission in February released its 'Extending Our Welcome: Trends and Strategies for Tourism in Appalachia,' a report that looks at the history of tourism in Appalachia and makes recommendations for communities looking to employ it as an economic strategy.

Though the research was conducted prior to COVID-19, many of these findings remain relevant—bearing in mind the pandemic’s impact on the tourism industry and public safety guidelines—and useful for current and future tourism planning. 
COVID Blamed for U.S. Life Expectancy Decline
Life expectancy in the U.S. fell by a year in the first half of 2020 as Covid-19 swept across the country, a decline not seen since World War II. Minorities suffered the biggest impact from January through June 2020, with Black Americans losing nearly three years and Hispanics losing nearly two years, according to preliminary estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The federal grants coming to North Carolina amount to a total of $166 million; $45 million is going to Haywood and west.
