Naphsis recently visited the Center for Health Statistics and Informatics (CHSI). Various topics were covered during the visit, including an overview of Naphsis and NCHS roles and VRHS Accreditation. Naphsis was also given a tour of the office and learned about its structure and functions. A special thanks to Dana and her team for allowing us to visit!

SMDES Update
There will be 16 jurisdictions live by the end of the calendar year! By July 2024, we hope to have a grand total of 21 ready to go. If you are interested in serving as an alternate state for the July group, please email us at systems@naphsis.org and we will get you started.
STEVE on FHIR

New Technical Assistance Program
Naphsis, in collaboration with NCHS, is introducing an enhanced Technical Assistance (eTA) program designed to complement our ongoing support to member jurisdictions. The program covers diverse areas, including Business Process Improvement, Funding Proposal Writing, Implementation of NCHS Standards, Implementation of Electronic Systems, Vital Records/Health Statistics Accreditation, and other improvement aspects.
Complete the application by clicking the button below. Applicants are advised to demonstrate the need for eTA, set clear goals, and describe the expected impact to enhance their chances of selection.
The application deadline is November 30, 2023, with notifications of selection expected by December 20, 2023. Selected applicants will undergo a virtual needs assessment and the development of a statement of work for eTA.

2023 NVDRS New Investigator Researcher Award Opportunity |
In partnership with CDC, APHA is currently accepting applications for the 2023 cycle of the National Violent Death Reporting System New Investigator Research Award. This opportunity is geared toward emerging researchers/investigators to promote innovative and quality analysis of violent death data collected by the NVDRS. Learn more about NVDRS.
To be eligible, you must have graduated with a doctoral degree in January 2018 or after. If chosen to participate, you will receive up to a $7,000 stipend to support your analysis and manuscript development.
The deadline to submit the application is Dec. 14 at 11:59 ET.

Josef Gasimov Named as State Registrar, Head of DC Vital Records Division, for the DC Department of Health
Josef Gasimov is the new Registrar at the DC Center for Health Vital Records. He will be leading the implementation of regulations from the DC Vital Records Act of 2018, upgrading the vital records system to improve services for customers and data providers. Josef will also be overseeing MOUs and data-sharing agreements with partner stakeholders, both District and Federal agencies. Additionally, he plans to expand outreach to engage with organizations and fellow Registrars, contributing to industry best practices and enhancing vital records management in the District of Columbia.

Joseph Watkins was named Section Chief for the State Center for Health Statistics within the North Carolina Division of Public Health, Office of Data and Opportunity. Joseph brings a wealth of expertise to this role and will provide leadership and oversight for the State Center for Health Statistics, which includes the Birth Defects and Monitoring Branch, Buisness Systems and Intelligence Branch, Central Cancer Registry Branch, and local Spatial Analysis Branch, Statistical Services Branch, and the Office of Vital Records.
