Newsletter
December 2018
Dear Parents, Students, and Members of the Narraganset High School Community,

As many of you know, Dan Warner, Narragansett High School Principal, has been in need of a kidney transplant for several years. This past weekend, he received the happy news that he has been matched with a donor and that his procedure can move forward immediately. I know you join me in wishing Dan and his family all the best as he undergoes this life-saving procedure.
Mr. Warner will be on medical leave until the Spring. While he is on leave, Mr. Toby Gibbons, who is currently our Assistant Principal, will fill in as Principal. Toby brings a wealth of experience as a teacher, administrator, and coach to the role, and I have every confidence that NHS will continue to support the learning and development of our students.
Please contact me should you have any questions, and please keep Dan and his family in your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Dr. Peter Cummings
Superintendent

School Highlights
On November 15th sophomores
Julia Highcove and Shelby Lefoley presented an assembly for NHS freshman and sophomore students which included a live interaction event with the Inner Space Center at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO). The students skyped with scientists about the potential impacts of a changing Arctic due to global climate change. The event was the culmination of the Northwest Passage Project High School Institute which Julia, Shelby and NHS science teacher Kathy Couchon attended at the GSO. The institute brought together 6 teams (2 students and 1 teacher) from across the country for 4 days at the end of August to follow the Northwest Passage Project expedition across the Canadian Arctic. While the expedition ended early when the ship ran aground, the students continued their interactions with the scientists and learned first hand about the water chemistry, ecosystems and animals, particularly seabirds and narwhals, of the Arctic region. These girls will present their experiences at a student scientist session of the American Geophysical Union fall meeting in Washington, DC in December. This annual conference is the largest gathering of Earth Scientists in the world.
