A Message from Mr. Gibbons
Happy New Year!

Late December is an amazing time of year here at the NHS. The exciting week before the break was capped on the afternoon of the 21st as we hosted the Jamestown Middle School 8th graders. Our guests were given a performance from our Chorus and Concert Band followed by a tour of our building and CTE programs led by members of the Class of 2019. The Guidance and Athletic departments finished the visit with discussion around some things we do which make us a wonderfully unique school.
The vacation was a wonderful break to have the students, teachers and staff rest, relax, and get ready for the final three weeks of the first semester. Exams will begin on January 22nd and run through the 25th.

Very best,

Toby
School Highlights
On December 12th, the Narragansett FFA traveled to Chariho High School for the annual holiday design contest with fellow Rhode Island chapters. Narragansett went big this year as students built a sleigh to be driven by Mr. Gathens oxen as a chapter entry. Members made centerpieces that will be donated to local nursing homes as well as played musical chairs, unwrapping gifts with oven mits, and guessing what's in the bag. Everyone had a great time and members can't wait for next year!

NHS ROBOTICS CLUB

On Saturday December 15th the NHS Robotics team came in 13th out of 24 teams in their first scrimmage at the Quonset Point Air National Guard Base. Everyone worked really hard these past couple months and we’re looking forward to our first state qualifier in January.

NHS Math teacher
Donna Mc Cadden, has been nominated and is currently an applicant for the 2018 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Program in mathematics. Being a nominee and completing an application for the PAEMST program identifies an educator as a truly exemplary teacher of mathematics or science.
The NHS Music Dept. is excited to announce that NINETEEN Narragansett HS students have been accepted into RI All-State Music Ensembles! This is a record number of All-State students for NHS!

Additionally, we have had one student, selected for the National Association for Music Education's All-Eastern Chorus. This is an ensemble of 300 students chosen from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington DC, and Maryland. Selection is highly competitive.
O n December 13th NHS Science teacher Kathy Couchon and Social Studies Chairperson Kristin Hayes-Leite traveled to Washington DC with 9 NHS sophmores where they presented climate change research at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Conference. The group researched the climate connections between coal, wind patterns and lung cancer and presented their findings ot scientists and graduate students. The AGU Fall conference is the largest gathering of Earth Scientists in the world with 28, 000 scientists and researchers present.
