Spring Curriculum News!
Summer Curriculum Academy
This summer we are continuing the Curriculum Academy structure set five years ago for curriculum design.
We will be holding the summer curriculum academy on June 24, 27, and 28, where we will be providing support and coaching to revise curriculum maps, key learning tasks, assessments, and units, as well as professional development with new curriculum materials training in targeted curriculum areas (ELA and Math). As of the date of this newsletter, we have 20 teachers registered to participate in this summer learning/planning academy!
Curriculum and Professional Development Committee (CPDC)
The CPDC (Curriculum and Professional Development Committee) had the first of 2 meetings this year.
This committee is composed of content representatives in all three schools and acts as a "think tank" for input on district Professional Development. During this Fall meeting, we sought input on: Right to Read PD, Diversity Equity/PD, RIDE's requirement for Curriculum Materials, and format for the State PD days.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 7th at 3:45.

A Springtime Message from Narragansett Prevention Partnership
|
|
Dear Parents/Caregivers:
The month of May brings thoughts of so many things: warmer weather, the school year winding down, social activities heating up, and the upcoming summer break. Graduations, ceremonies of accomplishments, final exams, students’ summer jobs, summer camps, beach days with friends...they’re all waiting on the not-too-distant horizon. Living and learning in a beach community, these anticipations are perhaps more pronounced for kids and parents alike.
As mentioned in our column last month, now is a great time to set expectations for the season ahead for your ‘tweens and teens. For a lot of parents, figuring out how to talk to kids in a way that can be heard
by kids can be tricky. How do you have these important conversations? Recently, the organization
Operation Parent hosted an excellent webinar to help answer this question. “Bridge the Gap Between
Parent and Teen: How to Keep ‘Tweens and Teens Talking to Us” The webinar can be viewed at any
In addition to being a time of anticipation for the activities of the months ahead in our community,
nationally “May is Mental Health Month.” According to Mental Health America, the purpose of the
month’s activities is to “spread the word that mental health is something everyone should care
about”…especially after 2 years of pandemic living that made many people realize that stress, isolation,
and uncertainty have taken a toll on their well-being. May is a great time to consider the effects on
yourself and your family members and seek more resources if needed.
Wishing you and yours well during this busy time of the year!

*NEW* Digital Equity Subcommittee!
As a subcommittee to both the Technology and Equity committees, our District Tech Coach is leading the charge on this new initiative dedicated to Digital Equity. Digital Equity was recently written into the 22-25 Technology Plan for our district:
Goal 7 - Digital Equity
Ensure all students have access to and ownership of the tools that best support them as learners, help students develop the skills and competencies they require in order to best take advantage of these digital resources, and communicate the value of using these tools to engage with learning experiences that are targeted, authentic, relevant, socially connected, and growth-oriented.
The first action item towards achieving this goal is to recruit a committee of stakeholders to bring to the table diverse perspectives, ideas, and experiences pertaining to digital equity.
You can read more about digital equity here.
If you are interested in joining this subcommittee, please contact Vanessa Miller: vmiller@nssk12.org

Mental Health Awareness Month
A note from the SEL team:
A child’s emotional wellbeing is just as important as their physical health. Mental health is important because it affects how a child thinks, feels, acts and learns. Mental health also impacts how children handle stress and how they relate to others.
To recognize the importance of Mental Health and Wellness, NES students and staff will participate in Health & Wellness Week activities during May 16th-20th. Click below to view some of the events and to learn more!

Music travels to NYC Competition!
On April 29th, our music department and students traveled to NYC for their long-awaited music trip!
The weekend included a bit of sightseeing and a welcome dinner at Friedman’s Restaurant complete with singing waitstaff. Then, four of our ensembles (Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, and Treble Choir) competed in the Music in the Parks Festival in Jackson, NJ.
After outstanding performances, all four ensembles achieved top ratings of Superior. Additionally, our Concert Choir was awarded the top overall Choral Ensemble, and senior Natalie Portillo was rated as the top overall Jazz Soloist, both for the entire festival weekend.
Following the festival, students enjoyed visiting Six Flags Great Adventure, an unbelievable day of learning and remembrance with a tour of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan and taking in a matinee performance of Come From Away on Broadway.
Throughout the weekend, our students represented Narragansett very well! If you see any band or chorus students in the hallways over the next few days, please give them a high five, and as usual, thank you for your support of Mariner Music.

Congratulations to NHS, a Sportsmanship Awards Recipient!
In March 2022, the Rhode Island Girls Soccer Officials presented their annual awards for outstanding sportsmanship during the 2021 Girls Soccer season. During the girls soccer regular season games, the girls soccer officials are asked to rate the sportsmanship shown by each school. This includes the players, coaches and spectators. At the end of the season all of the ratings are tabulated and the winners are chosen.
Each award is named after a former player or official whom exemplifies the passion for the sport, the dedication to their peers and the outstanding qualities of sportsmanship and leadership. Below is the award presented to Narragansett High School by Rhode Island Girls Soccer Officials past president, Joe DiLorenzo.
Division 3/4: The Jack Breetveld Memorial Sportsmanship Award

Joe touched on how Jack Breetveld’s dedication to the sport and the community still serve as an inspiration to players, coaches and officials to this day.
