Narrative Shift News

My Monthly Musings

This month I had the privilege of being the live podcast guest at the Adoption: The Making of Me’s live podcast event and conference. I shared my story as a transracial adoptee, teenager coerced to relinquish my son, and Black woman who learned to heal, set boundaries, and reclaim my racial identity. I met some wonderful adoptees and adoptee advocates, and I got to bear witness to the awesomeness that is Susan Ito’s one-woman show. I went home both refreshed and exhausted, but mostly thankful for community.

Shifting the Narrative

When I share my story, I am attempting to share knowledg of my experiences as an adoptee and mother who relinquished my rights as a teen. It is also important for me to share researched data in my talks. To support my work, I am embarking on a study of the experiences of mothers who have relinquished their children. I recognize that my story is my story, but that all of our stories, collectively, share themes and certain experiences that can be highlighted and added to debunk the traditional adoption narratives. I am excited to be doing research in this field and cannot wait to share more with you along my journey.

How does being in community enrich your healing?

I moved back to Baltimore, where I was born, two years ago. This month, I began to focus on building community in my beloved city. I have been building bonds with my biological family. I joined the board of a local nonprofit, Charm City Impact. And, I went to a Real Roots event where I met potential friends with whom I plan to explore more of all this underrated city has to offer. While I am an introvert, building community is so important for my emotional well being. Through community I find support, laughter, connection, and grounding. How does being in community enrich your healing?

Abby’s Affirmations

“The Magic is in the Experience”

So often we miss the forest for the trees. We miss the greatness of the experience, because we forget to be mindful during the process. Our society prioritizes the end result and not the lessons learned during the journey. My wish for all of you is that you embrace where you are, and show full appreciation for how far you’ve come and what you’ve gained along the way. Enjoy the process.

“Run The World"

Who runs the world? GIRLS!

This month was one of female empowerment. I leaned into my power as a Black woman presenting my lived experiences of racism and sexual abuse. I collaborated with female mentors and advisors. I pledged to create a female friend group in the city. I spent time supporting my daughter and my daughter-in-law as they navigated parenting. And I marveled in the fierceness of my college soccer goal keeper.

Enjoy a music break!
