Nashville school shooting: Resources for families to talk about violence

St. Louis Park Public Schools Families,

Yesterday’s shooting in Tennessee marked the 13th school shooting in the United States this school year. Three school staff and three children at The Covenant School in Nashville were killed in an apparent targeted shooting. Like many of you, I am experiencing an array of emotions - anger, outrage, fear, deep sadness, and many others. While details are still surfacing, we know that the continued increase in school shootings profoundly impacts our country, communities, students, and each of you.

Students deserve to go to school, engage in their learning, explore their identities in safe spaces, and just be without fear. The relationships that you build with students is our first line of safety. Please check in on students and help connect them with support when appropriate.

Some families may wish to talk about school shootings and help their children process their feelings at home. We invite you to review these resources:

This article also speaks to talking with students with developmental delays, disabilities, and Autism.

We want to assure staff and families that the safety of our schools and students is our highest priority. We are constantly reviewing our security measures to ensure there are multiple layers of safety in place to protect students and staff. We also urge everyone to speak up if they see or hear anything that could present a potential threat to school safety.

Please join me in expressing our deepest condolences to the students, families, and Nashville community.

In community,

Dr. Astein K. Osei
