Long Island Sound Coastal Erosion Forums

A successful event bringing communities together to address erosion


New York Sea Grant and Long Island Sound Study held Long Island Sound Coastal Erosion Forums in Nassau and Suffolk which brought together over 90 state and local decision makers, municipal staff, and other stakeholders working to address coastal erosion along the Long Island Sound shoreline!


The Nassau Forum on May 4, 2023 was hosted in partnership with the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District.The Suffolk County Forum held on May 10, 2023 was hosted in partnership with the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District and Suffolk County Legislators Sarah Anker, Stephanie Bontempi, Kara Hahn, and Al Krupski.


Participants shared information on best practices, discussed challenges, and identified opportunities to increase resilience, all in an effort to enhance coordination across communities. At the Nassau Forum there was a highlight of the Nassau Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC) and a showcase of one of the manufacturers of the nitrogen-reducing onsite wastewater treatment systems. The NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC), DEC, and the NYS Department of Health (DOH) announced the availability of funds in support of CWSRF and DWSRF for municipalities and certain non-municipal entities in New York State to finance water quality and drinking water related projects.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration has a grant opportunity that funds projects to address climate resilience of transportation systems including the use of natural infrastructure.

LIS Resilience Grant Writing Assistance Program is available!


Apply to the Long Island Sound (LIS) Resilience Grant Writing Assistance Program! This funding opportunity is open to municipalities and community organizations to facilitate the hiring of a grant writing contractor to assist with the development of a grant application for sustainable and resilience-focused projects within the LIS coastal boundary (within Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk counties, Western Connecticut, and Eastern Connecticut).


Funding is to be awarded in a range of $5,000-$9,950 per application directly to the applicant's selected contractor on a cost reimbursable basis and match is not required.

The Coastal Resiliency Network, a collaborative open forum for communities in coastal Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties to discuss and learn about opportunities to increase their resilience to sea level rise, flooding, and extreme events, is sponsoring a free virtual webinar focused on MyCoast New York. You'll hear from Jess Kuonen from NY Sea Grant about the tool! There will also be an opportunity to connect and share with other Network members during the webinar. The event is hosted by NY Sea Grant and the New York State Association of Conservation Commissions (NYSACC).

The Long Island-wide Program enables homeowners to be reimbursed up to $500 for completing small-scale water improvement projects. Projects include installation of a rain garden, native plantings, and the purchase of rain barrels. The Program is made possible by the LIRPC, in partnership with the NYSDEC and NEIWPCC.
