“On drums, Nate Smith is in the business of inspiriting. Far from flashy,
he’s an ebullient technician who keys into the subtleties
of his bandmates’ playing and laces joie de vivre into his own.”
 – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“The stylistic range is broad— Prince, Sting and Living Colour
are name-checked on the sleeve alongside hip-hop and nu soul —
but everything is tied together neatly and performed expertly by his core quintet.”
 – FINANCIAL TIMES

Hailed by NPR as “a brilliant drummer known for holding it down with everyone from Brittany Howard to Dave Holland to Van Hunt,” Smith recently discussed Kinfolk 2: See The Birds and more in an in-depth conversation with Apple Music 1’s iconic host Ebro Darden on his hugely popular Apple Music program, The Ebro Show, streaming HERE.

In addition, Smith recently posted a spectacular video clip showcasing his breathtaking technique captured live in his role as drummer with virtuoso quartet The Fearless Flyers. The clip celebrates the recent release of the band’s Flyers Live at Madison Square Garden, available HERE; a limited edition vinyl first pressing will be available soon, exclusively via vulfpeck.com.

The highly anticipated follow-up to 2017’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere, Kinfolk 2: See the Birds affirms Nate Smith as one of the most dynamic drummers, insightful composers, and engaging bandleaders of his generation, adept across infinite genres and multiple styles. The album sees Smith joined by an array of diverse fellow artists, including legendary guitarist Vernon Reid, violinist Regina Carter, vibraphonist Joel Ross, rapper Kokayi, and singers Brittany Howard, Amma Whatt, Michael Mayo, and Stokley Williams (of the pioneering R&B band Mint Condition).

Kinfolk 2: See The Birds includes such wildly creative tracks as “See The Birds (Feat. Michael Mayo + Joel Ross),” “Altitude (Feat. Michael Mayo + Joel Ross),” and “Square Wheel (Feat. Kokayi + Michael Mayo),” all joined by cinematic music videos streaming now at Smith’s official YouTube channel HERE. The latter track earned national applause from such outlets as NPR, which named it among “Jazz Night’s Favorite Grooves Of 2021, So Far” and raved, “That this music proudly defies classification is only natural – it's a core part of Smith's message.”

For nearly two decades, Nate Smith has been a key piece in reinvigorating the international music scene with his visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming. He holds a diverse and ample résumé, including work with esteemed jazz leading lights such as Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, José James, and Ravi Coltrane, as well as collaborations with Vulfpeck spinoff band The Fearless Flyers, Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes), Emily King, and Van Hunt.

Hailed by All About Jazz as “a many-faceted jewel whose luster only grows with re-examination,” Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere was met by international acclaim upon its 2017 release, earning two GRAMMY® Award nominations for “Best Instrumental Composition” and “Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Capella.” Smith also recorded a fantastic Tiny Desk for NPR that year.

Smith – who recently relocated from New York City to Nashville, affording him recording opportunities with multi-instrumentalist Mike Elizondo, producer Dave Cobb, and singers Shania Twain and James Bay – followed Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere with projects including 2018’s breakbeat solo drums LP, Pocket Change, and last year’s R&B-infused EP, Light and Shadow.
