Why did you choose Delta State?
As a first generation, me and my family did not know much about the recruitment process, especially for student-athletes. My main goal was to study at a university in the U.S. where I could pursue a degree in business and play in the lineup. But the most important factors were to find a place where my parents could afford my studies, the level very competitive, and the campus diverse. I would say the main reason I chose Delta was the welcoming community of my teammates. They all reached out and shared their thoughts and experiences at Delta. I felt very confident after speaking with them, and the Brazilian community was big, so all points were very positive.
What have you been doing since you graduated from DSU?
I recently completed my MBA in Marketing & Digital Marketing at the University of New Haven (Connecticut) where I was an assistant coach while pursuing my degree. As of right now, I am back in the Higher Education industry as a college advisor to international students who wish to pursue their degree in the U.S., just like me, either as student-athletes or regular students. I am also the partnerships manager at USP (higher education recruitment agency). I work closely with universities and mediate the pathway for our students with our partners, besides assisting in each step of college selection/admissions.
How did DSU prepare you for what you're doing now?
DSU was the perfect community and environment, where I learned to be proactive, self-sufficient, independent, and confident. It was my home away from home. Looking back, it was crazy to move abroad to another country away from my family and learn to communicate in another language, and the cultural differences could be a deciding factor in living in the U.S. However, my adaptation was very easy and smooth. DSU has prepared me to face new challenges with a positive perspective and confidence that I could handle anything life throws in my way.
What’s a favorite DSU memory?
I have several memories at DSU, from BBQ with my Brazilian family, road trips with the tennis team, athletic banquets, and game days, but one remarkable memory was probably the senior day. I remember our match was canceled due to the weather. It was a very singular senior day since we were all dressed up, so we did the "ceremony" in one of the rooms at Dorgan Center. Afterwards, I got to celebrate at No Way Jose [local Mexican restaurant] with my teammates. I think it is so remarkable because of the people I got share that day with and I felt the caring from each teammate. Definitively a day to remember.
