The After Prom Party (APP) is only 3 weeks away, and the committee is working to make it an enjoyable and memorable event for all the NHS students and their guests.  This year’s NHS Prom is being held on May 25th at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA. Immediately after the prom between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 5:00 am, NHS students attend the After Prom Party (APP) -- a fun, safe venue for continuing the celebration in an alcohol- and drug-free environment – which is free to juniors and seniors, whether they attend prom or not.

Parent volunteers are critical in planning, helping with set-up and clean-up, and overseeing the evening’s APP activities.  This is an ambitious project, but one we are committed to providing. We certainly could not do this without the help of parent volunteers and community donations.  Here’s how you can help:

Volunteer Your Time. To keep our kids safe and smart during the After Prom Party, we need adult volunteers (age 22 and up) to help the night of the event.  We have volunteer opportunities in a large variety of areas offered over multiple time slots on Friday, May 25th from 4:00pm until 5:30am the morning of May 26th so volunteers can select the hours that work best for them. It is always great to have 9th and 10th grade parents volunteering now so you can learn how to make this the best night ever when your child/children are juniors and seniors.

To volunteer at the APP, please visit:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e4eadac23a13-nhsafter

Sign Up for Food Donations.  To keep our kids well fueled and hydrated throughout the evening, the APP is also in need of food and drink donations Please note, multiple quantities are noted for each item, so please sign up for the amount you plan to donate. All food and drink donations items can be dropped off anytime the week of the prom (May 21-25) in the front office at NHS between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm. If you have any questions about food donations, please contact Shelley Juppe  scoshe43@comcast.net or Tina Savoia at savoia@comcast.net .
Note: Gluten-free food options will be available.

To sign up for food and drink donations, please visit:

Gift Card and Ticket Donations . We are also looking to make the games and prizes fun and enticing so all the kids want to stay for the duration of the event. Sports and concert tickets as well as gift cards make awesome prizes for our kids at the APP. If you can help us out with a gift card ideal for a student raffle, or have a great prize to donate, please contact Judy Lista at jlista@comcast.net or Marci Landis at landfamfour@sbcglobal.net .

Donate.  The After Prom Party is funded through donations from the entire community.  If you are unable to participate in any APP fundraising event but would like to contribute to the night’s festivities, please send and make checks payable to Natick High School After Prom Party, 15 West Street, Natick, Massachusetts 01760, or donate online at https://www.gofundme.com/nhs-after-prom-party-2018

Looking to get rid of a COUCH?
The After Prom Party committee is looking for couches to spread around the school the night of the APP to make it more fun and comfy for the 550+ students in attendance. We welcome any couch in good shape -- with NO pet hair, NO stains, and NO rips, please. If interested, we will pick up your donated couch on Thursday, May 24th (Natick only), use it for the APP event, and then donate it to the Natick Service Council where it will find a new home with someone in need. To schedule a pickup, please contact Rebecca Schneekloth at rschneekloth@natickps.org .

MATHWORKS' VISIT TO NHS
Mr. Matt Tearle of MathWorks shared the importance of mathematics in different applications with Ms. Pillai's Precalculus class. Did you know that Euler's theory of  coprime  numbers helps with mathematical encryption?  Mathematical networks allow for pagerank in a google search--measuring the relative importance of different webpages. Students were amazed at how polynomials can be used to create sine and cosine functions.

Thank you to Mr. Tearle for inspiring the next generation of mathematicians!
ATTENTION SENIORS

Please remember to inform your Guidance Counselor or Mrs. White ( swhite@natickps.org ) of ALL admissions decisions.  Your data is extremely important and helps us immensely in our college planning with other students.

Final Transcripts:  The Guidance Department will send a final transcript to the school you plan to attend in the fall. Transcripts will be sent in late June. This process is automatic and you do not need to request a final transcript.
MCAS - MATH
On May 23rd, and 24th, the sophomore class is scheduled to participate in the MCAS Mathematics exams starting promptly at 7:30 a.m. It is very important that students are here each day of testing to avoid having to take a re-test later in their high school careers, since passing the English Language Arts, Math, and Science MCAS exams is a graduation requirement.

Students were given a testing location for MCAS English Language Arts, and will report to the same testing location for MCAS Math. The sophomore English Teachers will remind students during their classes.

During each test day, we ask that students come prepared to begin promptly at 7:30 am, report to their designated room by 7:25, and bring with them the following items:
  • #2 pencils (at least 2)
  • Book to read when finished with the exam
  • Water
  • A Bag Lunch (in the event more time is required)
  • A calculator for Session 2, May 24th (only)

INCOMING 9TH GRADE ORIENTATION 2018
Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Guardians,

We are looking forward to a busy Spring and Summer of introducing and welcoming our newest students to Natick High School. This letter includes details on Step Up Night and New Student Orientation. We are also requesting that you complete an RSVP form below.

Step Up Night takes place on May 2nd, 6:45-8:30pm for all Eighth grade students, parents and guardians . You will meet administration, take a school tour and attend a fair highlighting all Natick High School clubs, activities and sports. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear from current NHS students about the variety of activity offerings, as well as sign up for the fall. It is a fun, high-energy welcome to NHS. Please save the date and join us.

New Student Orientation will take place August 23rd and 24th from 8:30am-1:00pm. It is our hope that every incoming Ninth grader and new student to NHS can join us. The orientation will be led by Natick High School faculty, administration and members of the Junior and Senior classes.

Here is what we are planning...

August 23-24, 2018 from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm at Natick High School . This replaces the orientation that we typically host the night before the first day of school.
  • Lunch will be served in the Dining Hall, following the lunch schedule of the first two days of school. Students should bring money to purchase lunch or bring their own lunch from home. Free and reduced lunch will be provided as if it were a regular school day.
  • Ninth grade laptop distribution, technology training and troubleshooting
  • Team Building, cooperative learning activities and tours led by Junior and Senior mentors
  • An introduction to Guidance Seminar led by NHS counselors
  • An introduction to the academic and extracurricular opportunities at Natick High School
  • A fun and lower-stress opportunity to meet your classmates, mentors, counselors and NHS staff
  • Tryouts for all fall sports begin after 1:00 pm on both days
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation both days

The two-day orientation concludes with the second-annual RedHawk Fest hosted by the Natick Police Department and SPARK Kindness. There will be music, games, food, prizes and much more. This is a great way to bring all four grades together for a back-to-school party. RedHawk Fest is scheduled for 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday, August 24, 2018.

We are requesting that all families complete the attached google form to indicate that you are attending orientation on August 23 and 24. Again, there is no cost for orientation, but it is important to get your RSVP to ensure proper planning for the two days.

We will be sharing additional details about the New Student Orientation across the year. We think this is a terrific opportunity for our newcomers to meet one another and their mentors, to learn more about their classes and extracurricular opportunities, to meet their Guidance Counselor and administrators, to know where to go on their first two days and to experience two lunch blocks with their friends. That’s a busy two days to kick off high school!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact myself or Erin Miller, New Student Orientation Committee Leader at emiller@natickps.org . Enjoy the remainder of the Eighth grade year!

All the best,
Brian Harrigan
Natick High School Principal
