Amazon will sell an exclusive brand of home health products called Choice
|
The move is part of
Amazon'
s recent push to sell more exclusive brands on its website. It also dovetails with Amazon's increasing interest in health and wellness products and services, although Arcadia initiated this project.
"I approached Amazon last year as they began to expand their health-care footprint," Arcadia CEO Bob Guest said in a phone interview. "I felt that something that was missing from their offerings was products for people with diabetes and other chronic disease states."

Chicago IDN to open 50 more immediate care centers
|
NorthShore University HealthSystem plans to open 50 new immediate care centers in Chicago and the north suburbs over the next two years, part of a multimillion-dollar plan to attract new patients.
The health care system also plans to reposition three of its hospitals to each focus on certain specialties.
The changes come as area hospitals compete for patients who are increasingly seeking convenient care that’s close to home and as more care is done on an outpatient basis

Flu season is here. Health systems are bracing for it.
|
Hospital leaders are facing another potentially severe flu season with memories of last year's unprecedented round still fresh in their minds.
The 2017-2018 epidemic accounted for an estimated
80,000 deaths
and was the first season in which CDC classified all age groups as "high severity."
Seniors were especially at risk. More than half (58%) of flu-related hospitalizations were people 65 and over. At least 180 children died, 80% of whom weren't vaccinated.
Joseph Masci, director of the Global Health Institute at NYC Health + Hospitals in Elmhurst, New York, told Healthcare Dive last year's flu season was challenging. The system faced crowded emergency departments and larger-than-usual numbers of hospitalized patients.
"The flu put a lot of demands on us, and we felt it. But we were there for our patients throughout," Masci said.

Walmart, Ochsner create a health plan
|
Beginning the first of next year, Walmart and Ochsner Health Network will partner together to provide a new health insurance plan for Walmart and Sam’s Club employees in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Ochsner has just moved into Shreveport, taking over operations of the former University Health hospital. No similar plans have been announced here.
The agreement between Walmart and Ochsner, called the Ochsner Accountable Care Plan, is designed to improve the quality of health care and lower health costs.
Accountable care organizations are groups of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers that coordinate care. The goal is to provide people with the right providers, avoid duplication of services and prevent medical errors that raise costs. Accountable care plans also work send more patients to primary-care physicians and have fewer visits to reduce emergency rooms.

Maine Healthcare System consolidates into $3 billion IDN
|
The national trend of hospital systems merging or consolidating continues. The hospital and service members that make up MaineHealth in Portland, Maine, will be one nonprofit system beginning January 1. It will become a single nonprofit entity.
Maine Medical Center, Southern Maine Health Care, LincolnHealth, Coastal Healthcare Alliance, Western Maine Health, Franklin Community Health Network and Maine Behavioral Healthcare will all be governed by a single Board of Trustees but with local boards which will have input.
The major thrust of the initiative was to strength rural medicine in Maine and close by sections of New Hampshire. MaineHealth operates a dozen hospitals and healthcare services.
The new, combined entity will have approximately 19,000 employees and more than $3 billion in annual revenue.
