Strengthen Your Immunity This Fall

Remember that as cooler weather rolls in, we can be a resource for building your immune system.  If you find yourself already feeling ill, come in so we can help speed recovery.

Fall is the season when we begin to see patients with sore throats, coughs, runny nose, body aches, fever or chills. Often patients will call to cancel an appointment because they do not realize that we can treat these ailments with acupuncture and herbs. Before those symptoms hit, orange-leaves-tree.jpg the most practical approach is to build your immune system, develop a system for cold/flu prevention, and getting immediate treatment if you do get sick. At ilumina we recommend the following practices for cold and flu prevention:

In Chinese medicine fall is the season of the lungs when we build the lung qi to prevent and fight respiratory tract infections. To build the immune system, get acupuncture twice a week for four weeks. Then if you get sick, get acupuncture immediately.

Exercise daily for 30-60 minutes. Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, with lights out by 11:00 p.m. Eat foods rich in the powerful antioxidant, Quercetin - Quercetin is found in red onions, grapes, blueberries, tea, and broccoli.

Meditation Classes at ilumina
Did you know ilumina offers Buddhist based meditation classes on Wednesday nights? It is hosted by Dana Price from 6:00 p.m.-7:15 p.m. The class will start with a brief introduction followed by a meditation practice.

After meditation Dana will guide participants through a  Feeding Your Demons session. Feeding Your Demons is a gentle and profound technique developed by Lama Tsultrim Allione used to clear blockages in our lives which are holding us back.

Dana became a certified facilitator over the summer and is on the path to becoming an Authorized Teacher for Lama Tsultrim. The recommended donation is $5 and is used to cover expenses. No one will be turned away for lack of funds and all are welcome. You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend. All can benefit from learning ways to calm the mind.
National Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day is October 24

October 24, has been designated as National Acupuncture day. The purpose of the day to educate the public on the benefits of using certified practitioners.  It also is a great opportunity to share personal experiences on how Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture have improved the lives of so many people.

"I love ilumina Healing. I started going to ilumina healing a few years ago to balance out some issues we get as women.  I have to say acupuncture is one of the most relaxing and healing experiences you will ever have in life. It's like a proverbial reset button, that when you're done with your treatment you feel 100% better. The staff at ilumina healing is well educated in this field and are the best in its class," -ilumina patient

How Do I Choose An Acupuncturist?
You've been reading testimonials about acupuncture in the press and online. Your sister in Idaho is raving about her acupuncture treatments and thinks you should try it too.  You have decided to give this different kind of medicine a try. Now, you wonder, how do I find the right person? Are all acupuncturists the same? My physical therapist offers dry needling, is this acupuncture?  You honestly do not know what to expect or where to begin.

One factor to keep in mind is that no two acupuncturists are alike. There are acupuncturists that are generalist and those that specialize. There are also acupuncturists that are warm and interactive and those that are cold and direct. This is not unlike physicians. Some acupuncturists have a specialty with advanced acupuncture facial training and years of experience. When searching for a provider, it is important for you to ask about the level of training and education and if they are trained in Oriental Medicine. Licensed Acupuncturists are required to have a minimum of 1800-2400 hours of education and clinical training. In most states they must be certified by the NCCAOM and state licensed. Online you can search for a trained acupuncturist at the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
