The Giving Times, June 2023

Over the years we have been tremendously fortunate to have individuals, foundations and businesses support our efforts to prevent shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma.

The Giving Times is a way to share and recognize accomplishments

over the last few months with the support of our donors.

Childcare Provider Training

In our effort to provide prevention education to all caregivers, we developed a training specifically for childcare providers and educators about the latest information on:

  • Basics of shaken baby syndrome
  • Period of PURPLE Crying
  • Soothing a crying baby
  • Coping with a crying baby
  • Safe sleep
  • Recognizing and reporting child abuse

A special thanks to United Way Northern Utah for a grant to support this specialized training for childcare providers in northern Utah.

The National Center would like to thank the Sorenson Legacy Foundation for their continued support. They have generously funded a grant for school-based prevention programs that will be released in the Fall of 2023, focusing on kids in grades 8-12.

Period of PURPLE Crying Update

In 2007, we developed and released the Period of PURPLE Crying prevention program. The program aims to support parents and caregivers in their understanding of early increased infant crying and is used to reduce the incidence of shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma (SBS/AHT). The program approaches SBS/AHT and infant abuse prevention by helping parents and caregivers understand the frustrating features of crying in normal, healthy infants that can lead to shaking or abuse. The program provides the opportunity for parents to learn about the crying characteristics from over 50 years of research on normal infant crying conducted by Dr. Ronald G. Barr, and other scientists worldwide.

We would like to thank the Department of Defense who has partnered with us for the last 10 years to bring this life-saving education to military families with newborns. They are amazing partners and advocates!
