In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, creating “National Correctional Officers’ Week.” Each year, the first full week in May is recognized as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, commemorating the contributions of correctional officers and personnel who work in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country.

Correctional Officers are public servants that play a key role in public safety and are part of the law enforcement community. They often put the interests of others above their own to protect the public.

This week is National Correctional Officer Week, a time to celebrate the great work being done across the nation. It is a time when we commend you for your sacrifice, bravery, and dedication to public safety through the effective management of some of the worst inmates in the nation. We at the Corrections USA thank you for all you do each and every day. We stand with you and are here to support you.

Starting today, and throughout Corrections and Police week, Corrections USA will have representatives attending functions to honor those who serve so bravely. We will also have CUSA representatives visiting House Representatives and Senators to advocate for Corrections and for bills affecting Correctional Officers as we do every year.

Once again, thank you all for your service and stay safe,

James Baiardi
