From A-State Childhood Services Newsletter - Arkansas State University

National Crayon Day is celebrated on March 31. It is an annual celebration of a drawing tool that has inspired creativity in people of all ages for generations. Everyone needs opportunities to be creative, innovative, and have fun. Opening a box of crayons opens a world of imagination and hours of fun.

(This year, March 31 falls on a Sunday, when many programs will be closed.

A Crayon Day celebration is fun anytime before or after the official day!)

Celebrating National Crayon Day

Collect crayon ideas from your coworkers and families. Can you collect at least ten different ways to use crayons?

  • Try replacing the paint on your art easel with crayons. The larger paper and angle of the easel offer a different drawing experience than a tabletop.

  • Read the classic children’s book, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Grab a crayon and take it for a walk around a sheet of paper! Invite children to tell you the story of taking a walk with their crayons.

  • Tape mural or bulletin board paper to the underside of a table. Children lie on their backs under the table to draw with crayons on the paper above them.

  • Read a book about crayons. Follett Titlewave suggests books to read for Crayon Day.
